Where do i find a MPEM on a 1989 sea doo? I have no idea what it is and people are saying that my be my problem? Is the MPEM the same as the CDI?????

ya not getting spark, I got a used coil from ebay, tried that and still did not get any spark.
Ill let you know what i tried.
I hooked a test light to the white wire going into the coil and i got good spark. I pulled the spark plug boot and put the test light at the end of the wire, i got average spark(not as good as i got going into the coil) I put the plug into the spark plug boot and grounded it to see if there was spark. I got a very little, I could not even tell during the day but at night i could see the spark, it was very fant. I am running out of ideas, i am about just to give up and sell it. lol

Ummm try this

ok i had a problem with my ski eariler this summer i had a lanyard problem umm it wasn't staying attached and it dies not saying thats yours with your ski i'm doing a process of elimination. Ok i don't think you'll need a new Mpem becuase they usually work or they dont, have you gapped your plugs lately? The mpem is not accually the same as the cdi although the mpem contains the cdi the mpem contains all the wonderful electronics that control your watercraft such as relays, and the rev limiter (the stuff that costs alot to fix if it goes out). The cdi i want to say it's black and it's screwed down to the mpem box and it has i think 6 wires. Do you have an shop manual for that ski? Do you happen to have a inline spark checker?

ok here is a list of everything I tried.
I bought 2 used coils from E-bay, they clam to be from working machines. I hooked them up and i put the plug into the plug boot and i got no spark when i ground the plug out. I pulled the plug out and put a test light into the plug boot and i got spark on the test light.

I took the white wire off the coil and tried to see if it got spark thru the spark plug. I didnt get any spark, I didnt test the plug wire with the test light, but i should have.

I also took the electrical box apart and found the kill switch wires and I by passed the kill switch. Still no spark in the plugs. but did get spark with a test light when i put the test light on the bottom of the spark plugs.

I bought new plugs, still no spark.

Does anyone have any ideas????
I am about to give up and sell it, but i dont want to I seems like it will be alot of fun. lol

I have no idea what else I can try.

First unplug your connectors from your board and use a spray cleaner on them, (electrical cleaner) and if that doesn't work the 587 motor has a wire harness that connects the coil to the CDI box in the front magneto cover. This harness viberates pretty badly and can break a connection wire, usually right at the connector where it attaches to the coil. thats why they moved the stuff to its own box in later years.

I would look in the magneto housing for the problem. It could be a bad stator, magneto flywheel or possibly that wire harness

i would take the mag cover off and just inspect it for any metal shavings becuase if theres metal shavings in there it might be grounding out the spark i have a 96 and i check mine and after i cleaned it out i seemed like i got a brighter spark. Whats your compression in your ski cylinders?

I do not have anything to check the compression with, I put my thumb over the spark plug hole and turned it over, it pushed my thumb off. (I know real high tech, but thats all i got) I want to try to take the fly wheel off but i do not have any special tool to take it off. I was told i needed one????
Can someone let me know?
Thanks

don....dig it when you post...:drool5:

alright, you sure its a 89, and not a 99. only reason is, cant remember that year having a white wire to the coil, but a black/red wire that then, tails off to a butt connector. If you unplug the butt connector black/red wire, then try to fire it. If it fires, then you have bad mpem.
