I recently obtained a 96 and 97 GTI. When I attach the key to the `97, nothing happens. no beeps, no lights, no gauges, nothing. I've charged the battery so thats not the issue. Is this a symptom of a dead mpem?

Thanks in advance for your input.

sounds more like a bad connection to me..if the ski's are new to you go through and clean all connections first

The person I got it from says his mechanic traced it back to the "computer" which im thinking he's talking about the mpem. I was going to try the diode fix based on what he told me. I just wanted to see if the symptoms match the diagnosis. I'll start poking around for the connections

I really only checked the 5amp fuse on the mpem thinking it was the mpem and I was going to try the diode fix.

I havent tried the 5x press start button diagnosit setting as I just read about it today.

I dont get any gagues when the lanyard is not plugged in but the start button pushed.

Looks like I'm just going to start at square one and diagnose on my own than to take the sellers word to focus on the mpem.

I guess, for my own troubleshooting- *IF* the mpem really is bad, would one still get the diagnostic beeps or gauges w/ lanyard off?

Probably not. Good idea to start fresh with your own diagnostics. It could be as simple as a blown fuse or a bad DESS post. Post back what you find so that we can all learn.

So tonight I started looking over the ski. I checked the battery to make sure i had juice. I' was good there. As I'm looking through I see this connection actually unplugged- me being the noob to jetski's that I am, I dont know what it is but I'm sure it needs to be connected. I plug it back in and attach the battery.

As soon as I connected the positive lead on the battery, POP!!! I knew it was a fuse. Unfortunately, at this time, I cant remember if I had the lanyard attached or not. I go up to the mpem and lo and behold, the 5 amp (which was actually a 4amp fuse) was the one that blew.
I dont have any fuses lying around so I'll have to give it a go tomorrow after work...

Any ideas what that connection is in the pic? Also is blowing that fuse a good sign that the mpem isnt bad?

thats for your stator..your stator is in that housing along with the flywheel...it wont run if that is unplugged ...if that is the connection you are talking about

Yea, it was unplugged for some reason. Thanks.
Now if the stator was disconnected, would I still get beeps/gauges?
I tried the advanced diagnostics by pressing the start key 5 times w/ no lanyard attached and no bueno- no beeps at all

Now I have to figure out whats blowing my fuse. I'm going to try disconnecting the rectifier and then plugging the fuse back in based on another troubleshooting thread I've read here. From what I've read, if the fuse blows with the rectifier disconnected than its the mpem.

try unplugging your vts and see if it still pops the fuse..and yes you would still get beeps just no spark or charging

I dont think the GTI has vts. I'm the new guy to jet ski's so I'm probably wrong. I'll put it on the checklist.

So I tried again last night. This time I unplugged the rectifier and immediately popped the 5amp fuse again. Started the mpem dissection. Took about an hour or so to get through to the diode on the mpem. I'll do some soldering this afternoon I guess.

Well, I'm happy to report I have a responsive GTI!!! It was the mpem. I swapped out the diode, reconnected the mpem and she turned over. She started up and I went to give it a lil blip on the throttle and she choked up and died. Plugs are fouled now- but at least she turns over!!!! On to the next step of troubleshooting/ ressurection!

Total cost: 2 diodes (spare-just in case) at $6 + $12 for express shipping.

Thanks for all of your input guys. This site is hands down the best resource for getting help and learning.

sorry but this reminds me of that scene in Johnny Dangersously... (best movie of all time)

Johnny Kelly: Hi Dr. Magnus. How's my mother?
Dr. Magnus: It's her thyroid, Johnny.
Johnny Kelly: What's wrong with it?
Dr. Magnus: We can't find it. Gonna have to do a thyroid search.
