RESTO Motor Cranks as soon as I put DESS key on Post

Hi All,
This is my first post and I'm hoping someone might have an answer.

I recently purchased (as salvage) a 2004 Seadoo GTI LE. The 717 motor was frozen and my intention was to part it out. After cleaning it up, it looked real nice and I thought I might give a try at replacing the motor.. The ski appears to have been submerged and then sat for a few years. The electronics box was water tight and was not exposed to water.

Just put in a used (but running) 717 motor that I purchased for $100.00. Also replaced the MPEM with an aftermarket one. After re-connecting the existing wiring, I placed the DESS key on the post and the ski started to crank. The solenoid was energized immediately. When the wire to the starter was removed off the solenoid, I could hear the solenoid clicking when the key was put on the post.

I suspected the on/off switch and then the solenoid. Both were replaced with good known used working parts. It still does the same thing. In fact, it also cranked over when the on/off switch was completely removed from the circuit. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, the MPEM does beep twice and appears to be working. I'm thinking the wiring harness is shorted. Any way to test it ? Thanks in advance..........Rob

Need some info on that aftermarket mpem. I suspect that is where cyour issue lies.

Or the YEL/RED is shorted to the RED/PURPLE in the back box.

Ok had a look at the diagram.
In the back box there are two relays.
One is the start relay and the YEL/RED wire goes to that. (the black is the ground and the relay gets switched on with + voltage)
The other is the Cutoff relay which is energised by the BLK/PURPLE (Which is energized with a - signal.)

When you put the key on, the BLK/PURPLE gets shorted to the BLK wire. This turns on the cuttoff relay which supplies power to everything. (that's its purpose) The mpem turns on and then goes looking for a key. But if yours cranks right away, there is something going on with the mpem. Either its missing a ground (Black wire going into the front engine connector) or there is another bad connection somewhere.

Thanks for the responses. The MPEM is an Arieltek purchased on ebay. The original MPEM was sold on ebay
before I decided to keep the ski. I failed to mention in my original post that the ski appears to have been submerged and sat a few years before I bought it as salvage. I will check the relays in the black box and the ground wire at the MPEM tonight after work and will get back to you. Rob
