So I have my 98 GS with the 717 and it is all stock. I can't leave anything alone whether it be cosmetic, performance what are some common mods. I would be interested in some more info on hydro turf, what color to get, and other cosmetic mods.

What do I have for options as far as performance? It seems to top out rather quick, and it is by no means slow, but I'd love more power. My buddy had a 92 SP and said that I should look into a ride plate as it will help me get on top of the water quicker. What else should I look at and consider to get this thing quicker?

Thanks!

Factory pipe, flame arrestor, carb rejet and ecwi REALLY wakes a 717 up. Matt Braley

Mods do limit the reliability though

96 XP800!
Keep the 2 strokes alive!

Where do I find the factory pipe? Is the flame arrestor the same as a spark arrestor? Does it just pull out? And what is an ecwi? AdamA96XP

Thanks and sorry about all the questions lol

Okay let me ask you this, because I know you are new to skis.

You said you have a girlfriend who will be riding, and you said your ski is running just about perfect right now. If you start doing mods as a new to seadoo rider there is a 99 percent chance that you will be doing lots of tuning, breaking down, and time with your head under the seat. Are you willing to do that, possibly have a pissed off girlfriend, and want to dump hundreds of dollars to maybeeee gain a few extra miles per hour? To me, not worth it at all. From the factory, seadoo has pretty much maxed out the motors to keep them reliable but powerful. If you want to make your ski faster, go ride an old Yamaha, then jump on yours. You'll be surprised how much faster it feels now. Lol.

I know you have to do the maintenance on them. Change the fuel lines, clean the carbs, and replace the fuel selector. It's not worth messing up a perfectly running older ski to gain minimally. Just my $.02

Ride your ski for a couple years, then sell it and buy a faster one. Stock is best

Skip the ride plate. Maybe he meant intake grate but they just help it in chop and may rub off a little speed.

A Factory pipe adds a lot of power but they are known to burn pistons up. They were never made for the heavier GS hull either just the XP and the HX so the added weight would likely add to the unreliability. If you really want it then it can be done but it's probably better to enjoy as is and look for a 98-99GSX that comes with the 130HP in that hull.

Thank you for all the responses! So honestly it's not worth the money, and I'm better off keeping it clean and reliable. That makes my happy. I have dumped a lot of money in mods but if they are really that good from the factory, I guess the only thin go need to do is maintain it and make sure my car is set accordingly.

The one other thought I have had too is too pass the GS off to the girlfriend and maybe look at something a little newer, or something like the 130hp model. I'd consider a spark, but not sure if I wanna spend the coin verses an XP or GSX. I'd really like to get a purple GSX or a purple and red GSXL (I think that is what they are). It'd be faster and cheaper than new one obviously.

So what is the main difference between my GS and the GSI and GSX? I have not found much info on the GS at all.

Perfect! Like I said I would love a new one but if I found another one like the gsx or even an xp I would try to get it this winter, and then I'd like to get a little sports jet boat next year too!
