Maintenance for regular drivers

Hey guys I have just bought a rxtx260 seadoo pwc. I'm very happy with it. Although I have a question. This is my first pwc ever, due to major changes in my life I am now moving from northern europe to the mediterranean area. So you can probably guess what is going to happen to the seadoo..it's gonna get driven hard very frequently. Probably i'll be using it around 2-3 times per week for 1-3hrs. So lets say on average maybe 5 hrs per week. I have read on this forum that most ppl dont use their pwc that much and i'm wondering what you guys recommend doing for regular maintenance, as ofcourse it will also have to cope with salt water. In the "who has the most hours" topic I see most ppl have max 600hrs on their pwc and that's why I also wonder what the condition of my pwc will be after let say 3 years..can I then just throw it away or will it last a lot longer ? Like 1000+ hrs ?

Hello, congrats on the new ride.

A 1000hr 4tec is rare but not unheard of.

Tips for longevity...

Regular oil changes every 50-100hrs....new plugs at those times as well...frequency would be determined by exactly how "hard" you ride. Don't leave your ski tied up at the dock over night. For that matter...don't leave your ski tied to a dock or floater for any length of time unattended. Wave action will do some ugly things to a ski.

Put a coupla bolt on mods to that ski and really open her up.

Regular service to the sc, ie slip washers and bearings...every 100-150hrs or so. Keep it warm in the winter if you can. Don't run it for any length of time at the ramp...don't beach the ski...don't suck up rocks into the pump. Wash her with fresh water after coming outa the salt...inside and out. Fog the inside of the engine compartment with WD40 or some such, frequently.

In short....common sense goes a long way. Treat it like any fine performance ride. It's meant to be run...but be mindfull to keep it in good condition.

Have fun.

Hi thanks for the answer.
What do you mean with "dont run it at any time at the ramp" ? For the rest it is clear. The things you mentioned dont sound too difficult, like oil change, plugs flushing etc..only maintenance of slip washers and bearings I dont know if one can do this self. English clearly not my main language so hard for me to get the picture regarding this sc service. I will read into this more.

I have waterfront property and plan on putting the seadoo on a drydock if you know what I mean..floating dock and you drive the ski on there, guess you have seen this before. Makes for easy cleaning and flushing I think. And also what you say about keeping it warm it winter, temperature in the place where the pwc will be used is now 15 degrees C (+-60F) so this will not be an issue. I will use it at this temperature too, with wetsuit this must be no problem i think. It's too bad the salt water is such a n issue, gives a lot of extra work like flushing cleaning etc.

ah almost forgot one more thing which is not clear " Put a coupla bolt on mods to that ski and really open her up" with search I get topics on mods for extra HP, is that what you meant ? I dont know if I will do this..this pwc is very fast already but as I know from land vehicles you get used to high speeds very fast too hehe..will read more into this also as I don't know how it will affect fuel consumption and engine longevity.

btw I spoke my future neighbours last week and this guy makes oil change only once per year, he got seadoo of like 2-3yrs old and it still runs..he only flushes and cleans thoroughly maybe once in 1-2 months too. Maybe he crazy guy but i get feeling most ppl dont maintain their pwc so good like i am planning to

Drive on floaters are nice.

What model year ski do you have? The "bolt on mods" very...but you'll be happier seeing better numbers than most with a similar ski.

Re running at the ramp....

People fire up their ski at the ramp....seen it a million times. Often though, they have no idea what the strata below the surface is like or the actual depth. Lotsa rocks been sucked up into pumps because people fired up their ski at the ramp...but in too shallow water. Be very carefull running a ski in water depths of less than a meter.

I have a 12 year old 4 tec gtx with 650 hours on it used in salt water. Always flushed and we'll kept and serviced by the book . Engine never gave me any real trouble. Issues were perforated manifold twice. And now the oil cooler perforated as well.. Guess it's where fluids pass wear and tear. Also jet unit been replaced twice. With new exhaust manifold. Oil cooler and 2 year old jet unit. How much more trouble free hours can I expect without major engine trouble ? Engine compartment is mint with plenty of wurth has 2000 sprayed annually. A new pwc will cost over 16000 euro in my area of same caliber. New pwc S dont have the storage I have now and recently I've been spending average of euro 750 annually in servicing. Does it make economic senso to get a new one ?after all its not unknown for new ones to give trouble especially supercharged ones
