Lost thrust and white smoke?!

Took the boat out today, it ran great even with 4 people on board and got up to plane fairly easily. I ran it at moderate speed with some intermittent idling for about an hour and a half before shutting it off for about 10 mins. Started it up again and ran at moderate speed for about 30 minutes before I saw a windsurfer and dropped acceleration in order to not create a huge wake. Once I tried to increase acceleration I noticed that my thrust dropped significantly (about half id guess) although it still pushed the boat forward. I figured I sucked up something but the thing that worried me was that more smoke than usual was being produced. Any ideas?

Check anything related to the engine - driveline, have you recently made compression test? grey fuel lines, water/fuel filter, wear ring/impellor, are you sure the oil system is drinking oil, pump oil checked/changed this season?

Finally got around to have a closer look and it seems that the wear ring is gone, I can see about 1/8 of an inch of space between the impeller and the pump body. Maybe the extra smoke was just due to the engine running harder just to create some thrust?

That would do it.

It's probably because you were idling around, and then got back on it. The 2 stroke engines smoke because of the oil mixed in... and you get steam since we inject water into a hot muffler.

Unless you get a smoke screen effect going... it's really hard to say why you get a little extra smoke once in a while. (don't worry about it)

Change the ring, and let us know how it goes.
