I just rebuilt my starter, new brushes, spring, o ring etc...

I put it all back together now it just spins, it not engaging, any ideas on what i did wrong, it spins good, battery is fully charged.

The only thing i can think of is that i put it back together wrong somehow, i sanded down all connections, and greased um, so i dunno guys, ideas???

ok so i took the starter out again, and i hooked it up to the battery charger, it spins free and great no issues there, but its spinning backwards, if i hook the positive and negative ends correctly it spins and the bendix piece doesnt move out, but if i reverse the polarity on the starter ends, it spins great and the bendix moves out???

so what did i do wrong?

can i just reverse the connections and leave it like that or will that damage something?

I wouldn't do that if I were you. Anything grounded to the block will see 12volts and short out.

NO!!!!

Your electrical still relies on a negative ground to fire the plugs.

When you put the brush plate back in, you timed it wrong. It's probably 180 deg out.
