Hi- just bought my first seadoo (used 97 GTX). I have put 4 hrs on it, fuel/ oil gauge is out, visually checked oil tank and it was 1/2 full at the beginning. I think I ran it dry, the engine began hesitating and backfiring. Obviously I need to refill the oil and eventually fix the gauges. What else do I need to do to get this going again. I read in other threads I need to have the lines bled, will the plugs need to be replaced? Any help really appreciated.

Hopefully you did not cook your engine by running it without oil.

Get yourself a small container, put it under the oil filter, disconnect it at the filter where it goes to the engine.

If oil flows out, maybe you are safe.

You will have to drain all the oil that is left in the engine.

Before doing that, find a source to purchase any brand of oil that is Low Ash API TC certified, then :1) bleed the oil lines; 2) fill your oil container it with oil.

Sometime back I posted a Thread entitled Rotax engine oils. Pull it up and find a brand that you can obtain in your area, or if you don't want to waste time just go to your local Sea Doo store and buy SD's brand, which likely will be twice as much as you can get it from other sources.

Remember, to either purchase the brand of oil that is listed on my list, or any other Low Ash API Certified oil that you can find that is not on my list.

Do not purchase any brand of TCW3 2-stroke marine oil.

Sorry didn't see your response there surfbeat! I hadn't refreshed for a few. But here is my two cents along with yours. :agree:

I would do a compression test to make sure they are both at around 150 psi to make sure you didn't toast the motor or scar your pistons, etc. Then since you will be messing around with this anyway and its new to you, I would get a new in line oil filter and replace that too. Then fill the oil tank with seadoo approved oil.

I would do some reading about bleeding the lines. Just search through the threads here. There is a screw on the oil pump at the front of the engine that you can loose. To bleed the line there, the other line will gravity feed into the crank case. Hope that helps a bit, there is a ton of helpful info from the experts on this forum!

Good news- oil is OK

After a day to calm down and really look at it I found there is still a about a quart of oil in the tank. I dont think that's my problem any more. I did find Im the proud owner of the gray fuel lins Ive read so much about on here. If it was a blower or chain saw Id think carbuerator, it stalls when you try to give it gas and back fires when you rev it up and let RPMs drop back down. Going to keep reading here, there seem to be some common traits w/ some of these other problems. plenty of info on replacing the fuel lines too.

DIY Recommendations

I just pulled my 97 GTX out of the garage after sitting for over 2 years and did a lot of what you should consider.
1) Replace Gray fuel lines and clean or replace fuel selector valve
2) New inline oil filter
3) New small oil lines to carb
4) New spark plugs
5) Clean/Replace fuel filter
6) Clean the RAVE's - New O'Rings and gaskets
7) Clean carb filters and tune up the carbs (I am not familiar with carbs, so i did all the above and took to a mechanic to go through carbs and he put in new diaphragms.)
8) Change the jet pump oil (since you don't know when it was done last)

You'll find threads with instructions on how to do all of the above. Just search the topics.

Here is a thread I put together that might help.

Good Luck!

Bad spark plugs

Thanks for all the info and help- Replaced the plugs and it's back to normal- ran it all day on Sunday and it ran greaT. I'm surprised they went so bad so quick but won't argue w/ the solution. Tons of good info in here- don't have the time to do all this maintenance at once.
