I just got a '97 Challenger 1800 and am a first time boat owner. Any tips on cleaning the interior of the boat? I assume I need to use a gentle cleaning agent, but when finished, can I gently hose down the interior and let it drain while drying the high parts??:stupid:

this is a tough one...

Can't wait to hear what tricks people have learned on this topic. My biggest complaint is the thick layer of muck that builds up around the seat cushions. I'll remove a cushion and to my surprice there's a thing ring of mud that's collected underneath the seats.

I just keep an extra towel on board and i'll wipe everything down when needed. I just dip it in the lake water if I need to wet it and scrub something off. I've thought about buying some wipes but I'm not sure it's worth it.

Another annoying pet peeve is the dirt and debris around the carpet. That stuff is hard to remove...it sucks having to unsnap all that carpet.

Hull Cleaning

This isn't in response to your question about interior cleaning but I was reading the related links below. One talked about Hull cleaning. My first year cleaning my boat hull I got something from Walmart (don't remember exactly what it was so I can't really comment on the brands that are recommended in the post) but it didn't clean very well and if it wasn't rinsed off at exactly the right time it would leave black streaks. I spent more time cleaning the black streaks than the algae. Last year I used Marikate "On & Off Hull Cleaner" from West Marine. This stuff is awesome. Melts the algae away in seconds and does not leave streaks. I think on the bottle is says pour it in a bucket and brush it on - but luckily the guy at West Marine happended to mention to me to put it in a spray bottle which made the cleaning go much easier and much faster, plus I used less than half the bottle this way. Cleaned my whole hull in under an hour where the year before it was easily 4 hours. Careful with the mist though, this stuff is really potent. Last year I held my breath, sprayed an area, then ran to fresh air. This year I'll just wear a respirator :)

Good to know Jake. I haven't had to clean my hull just yet since I normally store the boat out of the water. Do you just pull your boat out and clean it while it's on the trailer or what?

yea, I clean mine on the trailer which leaves 2 dirty strips on the bottom. I was told you can lower the bunks one at a time to clean where they hit the boat but I never tried that nor am I sure exactly how to do it without the boat tilting. Does anyone have an approach to clean the entire hull?

i had stains on the sides of the seat cushions where they meet the hull. since they are white, i thought a strong cleaner would be ok. it was an industrial-strength formula 409 type cleaner. it worked great on the stains, but it ran onto the front and streaked the white vinyl with even whiter streaks. it would have been ok in such an inconspicuous place if i applied it with a towel instead of spraying it on.

yellow stains on seats

I have white (and blue) seats in my boat. An old rubbery style life jacket (that I've been meaning to throw away) was left laying on the seat to dry. It stuck to the seat and left a yellow stain on the seat. Suggestions for removing the yellow stain? Will a cleaner like 409 with bleach work, so far I haven't tried anythig.

ps. I must be getting really old, because I'm actually thinking of trading the boat in for a pontoon becasue our lake is only 379 acres and it gets boring riding around in circles so I spend most of my time on the PWC jumping wakes from other boats (of course that ain't good for my bad back and I can't walk the rest of the day, so ride em hard while you are young kiddos). I filled the gas tank on the boat at the beginning of the season and still have 3/4 tank so it doesn't seem worthwhile to keep the boat.

We had a 22 yr old kid drown last weekend trying to swim across the lake at 5am.- very sad...
