Hello, I bought a sportster from a friend, I understand it is a 96 or 97, so it should be a 717, needs some engine work, I was thinking a rebuilt just put in would be a good idea? Does anyone know if an engine upgrade can be done? maybe a bigger or newer model engine?

It would probably be best to stick with the stock 717 engine. What work does the engine need? Have you run a compression test? Is the fuel system in order? If the boats are the same as the PWC's the last 2 digits in the VIN will be the year.

I checked and las two digits are 97, so its defenitly a 97, it has a cracked piston and crankshaft, but since its kinda old and I dont knoww what type of or if it had maintenance done before, I was thinking about a rebuilt engine just for replacing it a starting with something rather "new", and here comes another question, if the engine on it is a single carb, and I go for a rebuilt, is it of any benefit going dual carb?
