Impeller removal

I have read up on all the operations to remove and replace my wear ring and impeller but question....Does the shaft need to come out with the pump removal? The shop manual states this needs to happen but all the links I have read don't mention this at all...

nope...undo the 4-17mm nuts against the hull, remove the steering cable and reverse cable (if applicable) on the grate and nozzle, then pull the pump...10min.
