How to test and measure the rectifiers

Anybody got some pointers or info on what kind of measurements I should see coming out of the rectifiers? I've measured some funky voltage readings coming out of it on the red wire. I'm reading 20 volts AC(which is somewhat understandable because the diodes only simulate DC voltage by knocking off the tops and bottoms of the AC sinewave)! And the wierd thing is a negative small DC voltage(this is going from engine case to the red wire output). But battery's are charged and start the boat's engines fine. Just trying to better understand the boat.....

ryan...give ya props on the o-ring issue...but think, 1 of us mentioned to check it, during those 30 posts...,

Start motor, than rev it to 5500rpm, it should then be (battery) around high 13v/low 14v,
