How cold is too cold?

Hello everyone,

I'm brand new here and just got my first ski a few weeks ago. Despite the weather, I have a really bad itch to take it out[emoji30] is there anyone who is crazy enough to go out in the middle of winter? I know the 4TECs have the closed loop cooling, but does that make a difference? Is there a temperature where it's not good to run the skis in?

No worries IMO, other than ice is rough on a fiberglass hull. Maybe allow some extra time part throttle (maybe 3,000~4,000RPM) to warm up the oil and cylinders before running it hard, ie:I'd avoid WOT the first 5 minutes or so.

The 4-tec operating temp is thermostatically controlled thus once warmed ambient temp effects have little impact aside from air density is greater

The important thing IMO is to avoid high power loads until the engine is brought to operating temp.

Sweet, thanks. I'll try to lay off it for a while when I get out there.

Yeah, there is a thermostat so the engine will run at proper temperatures regardless (if everything is working as it should, of course).

I have a newer ski with a coolant temp monitor and usually by the time I idle past the no-wake zones the engine is almost at full operating temp according to the sensor, so I just take it easy for a minute or two to make sure the oil can catch up (in most engines the oil temp will lag the coolant temp about 50*F when warming up) before opening her up.
