High Speed Issues

Need opinion....

I had my son replace all of the fuel lines and his 96 SPX and also cleaned the carb's. and replaced the float on the sending unit.

After the repairs, his reserve tank works and his fuel gauge works.

I took the machine out yesterday and it keeps sputtering/shutting down at high speed, but not on low speed.

My first thought is that engine is not getting enough fuel, something also worth mentioning is that the stickers on the right side of the machine just under the gas cap are flaking/peeling. I am now wondering if the breather is blocked to the fuel tank.

Has anyone experienced this issue in the past. Aside from pulling every fuel connection and double checking them, I do not know what to chase on this machine.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

the fact that it only runs right on reserve is a red flag, go ahead and replace the fuel selector. for that ski they are only 22-25 bucks for an OEM one. its a false economy in cleaning the fuel selectors as even though you might get all the gunk out, anything strong enough to do it will also eat away at the inner rubber seals. i had my 4th of july weekend cut short a couple years ago due to a bad fuel selector leaking air into the system.

also check that the rubber o ring in the fuel/water separator is in good shape and that it is tight and not crossthreaded.

Ryan makes a good point, if you put the return line on one of the feed lines and the "on" line on the return port, it can't circulate the fuel right and it backs up and bogs down from too much fuel. That's a less likely cause, but its out there inside the realm of possibilities.

Thanks for updating the thread with the solution! It will help people in the future for sure.
