Bought a 2003 Sportster in good shape from a local at the end of last summer. Standard engine, not the 215 supercharged. The wife and I only got to take it out 4 times last season before it got too cold, but we had a blast. I took the boat back out t the lake last weekend for a spring shakedown run. The boat started and ran fine, but seemed to be running alot higher RPM's than i remember. I hit the trottle to get up on plane and the tach rolls over to max until i plane out and back off the throttle. Once planed out the boat was still running about 6500 at roughly 30 mph. The RPM's arent continuing to climb and the boat seems to be running strong, no signs of overheating or anything like that. Should this RPM range be normal?

Im willing to bet its your wearring, It a white plastic ring them goes around the impeller IF you have the 4tec motor the clearance between the ring and impeller should be NO MORE then 0.35mm (.014in) measure at th tip of the blade....... Search wearring youll get lots of info on them. i think news one's are around 40 bucks

Both the impeller and wear ring had just been replaced when i bought it last year (previous owner had sucked up some gravel). I'll check it again soon as i have a chance.

Just realized i put this in the PWC forum, I'll repost in the boats section.

Posted the following over in the PWC section on accident :stupid:. Thought i should move it over here:

maybe the mods can move it.... if he sucked up gravel then wearring and maybe the impeller well get under the boat and have a good look at them

Pump issues?...

Sounds like you may have issues in your pump. At 6500 RPM, you should be hitting 45 or 50 at the very least.

Take a flashlight and have someone shine it in from the back of the nozzle while you lay under the boat looking through the inlet grate. Look at the amount of light being reflected through the wearing ring. Look for any signs that it's not evenly spaced, all the way around and that you don't see more than an "eclipse" of light at the edges of your impeller blades.

It's pretty new to have impeller wearing ring issues but if it was used mostly in salt water beach areas, it's possible that it was worn down early........

checked the wear ring and impeller last night. both are brand new. There looks to be very little daylight between the ring & impeller, though there is a good bit of corrosion on the shaft itself. Boat is mostly run in fresh water. I had it out at the coast twice last year, maybe 2 hours each time.
