i have a 98 seadoo bombardier xp, just bought it...
It wont go over 10 miles per hour in water. Out of water it revs great. Changed plugs. Cleaned carbs, good fule, compression is 150 on both,
The prop had a rope tangled in it when i bought it, cut that out and checked the wear ring and carbin seal.

We need to know what the rpms are doing in the water. Is the engineer revving at high RPMs when only doing 10mph? Or is it bogging?

That sounds like a fuel delivery issue. What color are the fuel lines? Did you receive any transfer of knowledge from the previous owner especially concerning the carbs. When was the last time they were rebuilt?

Just cleaned carbs. Fule lines are the old gray ones but all look clean and are in great shape. No gree gooze

Couple clarifications: Is this a '98 XP or an XP Limited? The service manual only shows me XP came out as LIMITED.

Fuel lines are old grey -> "They look great"...yeah from the outside. They NEED to be replaced with standard 1/4" automotive fuel lines and the fuel selector switch too and the fuel filter gasket too.

My strong guess is the carbs need a good service/rebuild.....let's face the facts, the ski is 22 years old.....just "cleaning" a carb at this point doesn't tell us enough or do it any justice.....so, might as well start fresh and do it right. Get genuine Mikuni parts kits, get the Carb rebuild sticky POST (top of the forum and follow it -to the letter) and get the correct carb spring(s) = 95 gram (the carb kits don't necessarily come with the right springs OR you need to know which one is the 95 gram). Low speed screws OUT 2 turns +/- 1/4, High speed screws = 0. Carbs synchronized when put back in and the idle adjusted and synced to the oil delivery - assuming you still have the stock oil pump in service.

EVERYTHING about these older ski's is good battery and good fuel delivery.....without either.....you won't go very fast or get very far.

Yeah, I agree with Ck. Take the care now and you'll get a lot more from the craft. I believe the XP limited was the only XP model released that year (98). In fact, it was it's debut that year. The year it went from the 787 (110 hp) to the 951 (130 hp)

While you are at it. It is time to inspect the little oil lines from the pump to the intakes and change the inline oil filter if still using the oil injection system. The little lines can start cracking. Replace if necessary. Also inspect the drive shaft adapter/damper coupler. At this age, they start becoming brittle and coming apart. If any signs of that, replace now before center bushings and shaft damage occurs.

There is only one 1998 XP and it is the "Limited" which is just a marketing term. It's a carbed 951/947.

1. You have to rebuild the carbs with new Genuine Mikuni parts, not just "clean" them.
2. You have to get rid of the gray lines no matter how they "look".
3. Replace the fuel selector, do not clean it.
4. Check the fuel strainer o-ring or just replace it completely for $25.

Not sure if it is a limited or not, (it doesn't say limited on anything I have with it) as for all of the fuel fixes you suggested, would they still apply if out of water it revs and doesn't bog down at all??

Yes, running out of the water tells you nothing other than it runs.

This is a 1998 XP.

As stated, the limited was the only XP that year. Yours is a limited. The suggestions provide were based on the original information you gave us, so let me say again, "yes"

That is not a 98xp limited. That is a 97 XP with the 787 engine. Same suggestions still apply.

looks pretty similar to mine. okay I sill start with the list of replacements
Same hull but completely different powertrains. Trust us, you have a 1997 XP with the 787 twin carb. Owned one brand new and 1997 and just did a full service on one this weekend.

That one looks pretty clean on the outside. Looks like it has been cared for. Hopefully, it looks and is as good in the hull.
