I'm going to look at a 96 GTX and a 98 GTX RFI tomorrow. How dependable is the fuel injection on the RFI. The 96 has a SBT engine with less than 25 hours on it and still has about 9 months worth of warranty left on it, along with a new wear ring, pump rebuild etc. Their asking $2400.00 for the 96 and asking 1750.00 for the 98. Not sure what if anything has been done to the 98...
Which would you take a serious look at?

Thanks,
Martin

Carbs.
Always the go with carbs.

Its like buying a mercury motor seadoo.

Thats kinda what I thought too but wanted to ask. I know the carb(s) are definitely easier to work on and less complex which would allow me to work on it vs having to take it to the shop. I'm getting more confident each time I work on the Sportster and it runs after I get it back together. I guess all that wrenching I use to do on them old 2 stroke dirt bikes is finally paying off..

Gotta love the simplicity.
It definitely gets easier when you realize you can't make it worse buy taking it apart.
Putting it together takes time / manual and some cocktails but fairly easy for a beginner to wrench on for not a lot of $$

Also looks like they are trying to recoup the cost of the new motor. $2400 is too high for a 96 GTX.....I know, I have the same ski.
Check NADA/blue book for value. $1600-$1800 is more like it...maybe 1900 for new motor.....but every ski should come with an engine, it's expecdted.

Your reading my mind, hahahaha cuz I said the exact same thing, the guy is trying to recoup money for the motor which running or not it should have. I've found a couple of comparable ski's within a 100 mile drive closer to "book value" ($1600-1800) range, gonna use that to see if I can get him down in price, doesn't hurt he's had it up for sale for a week or so without selling soooo...

After the initial ahhhh hell, and freaking out I realized its a big dirt bike engine with a weed eater carb. I've rebuilt the carb on every trimmer, blower, and chain saw in my shop, some more than once. It really helped once I got the carb apart on the Sportster and realized how much it looked like the carb on my commercial blower...

The rfi ski is alot more user friendly. No choke to deal with or rich/lean adjustments or carb rebuilds to worry about. The rfi system is computer controlled with no adjustments or maintenance needed and has been very reliable. I have a 99 gtx rfi.

I have owned several RFI's and like them personally. Crisp throttle response, easy starting, better fuel mileage. Yes, when they break there is some figuring out to do, but no differnt then fixing a carb motor.

In my area they go for around that price all day long.

thanks for all the advice guys. I like fuel injection, just wasn't sure how dependable it was on a ski, specially using ethanol based gas..

Thanks,

I use stabil marine ethonal treatment with each fill up on my rfi. If I dont it is hard starting and wont idle. With stabil I have no problems.
