GTX RFI Is there a trick to removing front RAVE valve?

I have a 1998 GTX RFI. I have not been able to remove the front RAVE valve for cleaning without removing exhaust manifold. People on this site say all I have to do is disassemble it in place. I have done that and cannot get the housing to clear the stem on the guillotine. Nor can I pull the whole thing out together. Still need another 1/2" or so. All the guts of the valve have been removed so there is nothing left to take apart. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

Piston that 'seals' rubber diaphragm screws off of the guillotine. The spring sets between piston and adjuster of RAVE cap. Piston has 10mm hex in the center. After piston is unscrewed housing, piston and rubber diaphragm all lift up. All that is left is guillotine setting in its slot. Guillotine will clear header
