Ok hi everyone, I am a new jetski owner. Just bought 2 2002 GTX DI's this past week. I had to hook up one of the steering cables on one of the myself. I had all the parts and used a diagram I downloaded off of the Internet. The cable was stuck but broke free after a couple of pulls on the handle bars. They had set up for 2 years prior. Serviced them and we took them out this weekend. Mine is the one I had to put back together. The steering on mine is a little tight but works fine at speeds of 20mph or less but past that it becomes hard to control I am allways having to turn the handlebars to keep straight. It even turns on it's own some. I don't mean a 90 degree turn but still enough that I need to correct it. It also turns a little if I lean to one side or the other. I got on my wifes ski and hers did not do this at all hers was perfect. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this and what I can do to fix it? I am very handy with tools and have been worked on boats before. I just need some direction. Thanks for any response and for this great site. I know I will definately be using it.

The steering linkage is adjustable. Adjust the set screws to get the bars and pump straight. Leaning on any machine will usually make it slightly lean, thus adjusting your angle of direction.

thanks for the info. I will check again when I get home but I am farely certain that they were lined up when I reattached the line. Who knows maybe I was not directly behind the thing when i was looking. Also by leaning i mean simply shifting my weight a little to the left or right physically turns the machine. This did not happen on my wifes machine. I can almost feel the jet on the back change direction. When it does change direction say 12 degrees to the left while i am sitting in the middle, if I dont turn the steering i will continue going in that direction. If i do correct it, it will turn to the right about the same amount and so on. I did check the ends of the steering cables before i attached them and they were both tight. its like the jet is moving to the left and right on its own and will only stay in the middle for a few seconds at speeds higher that 25mph. but like i said at speeds less than that its ok just a little stiff to turn. thats probably because more of the ski is in the water. Could it be something to do with the OPAS or something not tight under the steering housing or in the back?

Every hull design will react differently. (with leaning, weight transfer, etc)

And the pump may not be 100% straight for the machine to go straight. Take a wrench with you next time and adjust it when your out there.
