I'd like to share an unusal incident that happen to me last weekend. I finally got my 96' GSX resto completed and on the water for a break in. I went out several times throughout the day running it for nearly 3 hours.

I noticed the fuel gauge wasn't dropping much at all which was weird. At the end of the day late that evening I pulled the front storage bin out as I was about to cover the ski and put it away. I noticed the gas tank was collapsing on itself like it was melting or something. I opened the gas cap and a rush of air went in the tank. After a while it returned to normal.

I thought maybe I had the air in vent fitting in backwards, nope it was correct, but I did have some fuel in that line near the fitting.

Here's how it happen, I put 15 gallons in the tank and apparently when I blew in the return line to get fuel to carbs, I had fuel go into the vent lines and didn't notice it. I have clear lines so it would have been easy to spot.

All is good now, the vent lines are clear and they function properly and the tank survived.

Lesson? Make sure your in relief vent doesn't get fuel in it or it'll collapse your gas tank.
