Fuel gauge not working GSX limited

So I've managed to fix everything else the only thing not working on the ski now is the fuel gauge display.

So how do I fix it?

Is the display dead? Is it just not reading fuel level or can you just not read it in the sun? We need to know those things before we can point you in the correct direction.

Yes the display is working. Clock showing and can scroll though, speed, avg speed, hours...... Etc Red light lights up it's just the fuel gauge has nothing showing and the tank is full

Either the float is and/or float magnets are gone or the F1 fuse is blown on the sender in the tank.

All the fuses in the front of the ski are brand new. Where is the float located on the tank and can it be fixed or will it need a new float

F1 fuse is in the sending unit. Float is the sending unit. It can be removed and fixed.

This is the video I used as a reference to repair mine.

not sure about your ski but on mine (97 gsx) I had to move the tank forward in the hull and remove the steering column to get it out.

Seems to be pretty common, I cut it open and fixed mine and afterward put an inline 1/2 amp fuse on one of the wires. After you pull it you can check it with an ohm meter to tell you what's going on, you'll get 0 if you have a blown F1 fuse. You either have a float that fell out the bottom or a blown fuse.

Well thanks for all the help. Wasn't expecting to have to cut stuff up to fix it but needs must.

I also noticed mines got the dreaded grey fuel lines. Do these really need changing asap?

If the float is bad you shouldn't have to cut it from what I have read. osdparts sells the float and they have instructions on their website.

Measure the resistance across the two wires coming from the probe and if you get anything except for an open circuit then you may just have to replace the float or the little magnet on the float and it is available but if you get no resistance at all that means you have to cut it open and replace fuse. Or like most people do just solder over it.
Keep in mind even though most people solder over the fuse that is technically defeating safety feature "end disclaimer"

Actually it’s just resistance so it’s not like there is voltage going through it that can cause a problem like an electric fuel pump. Soldering over it is fine.

I'm always thinking worst case scenario.
There is I think 5v across the wires going to the sending unit using the resistance as a way to complete the circuit.
But current is almost non existent so yeah I agree with you micki, just always a little leary of what if the indicator shorts out. And sends power to there. (Had an oil sensor get fried from a salty indicator before)

I would agree with better safe than sorry too Mekanix. I know everyone was afraid when the OEM started putting electric fuel pumps in the tanks of new cars thinking they would all explode. Now every car has it and not one has blown up.

Now this bit might get confusing......

What size fuel line down I need. Don't really wanna start stripping out pipes without having replacements

On a GSX Limited it will be 5/16" (8mm) for the majority and 1/4" (6mm) for the return line.

So made a bit of progress today.....
Did the modification to the fuel sender. Checked for continuity and it beeps!

How important is it to fit an online fuse to the cable?

Gonna start the fuel lines tomorrow

Absolutely. It is very low voltage and only reading resistance. Considering the injected skis have a 12v fuel pump running in the tank.
