flooded engine. runs fine out water no power in water

Title says it all. Flooded an engine. Blew out all the water. Start and revs fine out of water but no power, 10mph or less, in water

Here is the story. Sold 2000 951 RX to a friend of mine. We tested in and out of water before I sold and everything was good. He took it out the next day and the maint light came on. He looked at the info center and saw 352. Rode for a little while longer and saw 400 on the infor center. He thought it was overheating so he shut it down.

Called me that evening and told me what happened. I explained the maint light comes on periodically to remind you of maint (I think every 50 hours). The ski was approaching 150 hours. Also that the numbers he was looking out was probably the time of day. The water temp of 353/400 would have not been possible.

I told him to go and check the gauges to see if it is the clock he was looking at. Also told him how to reset the maint light. He did all that and it was the time of day and the maint did reset. He wanted to start it on land so I explain how to hook up the water so he could run it on land. He got water hooked up and then was called in the house by his wife. But had not started the engine. comes out 10 minutes later and the engine will not start. All he heard was "thud" . Of course the engine was flooded. So we blew out water, changed plugs and everything started and reved fine. But we take it to the water and no power. goes about 10mph max. out of water starts and revs fine again.

Yesterday he takes it to a shop of another buddy of his. They tell him engine is shot. No compression. I told him I think the likely hood of it going from running great to flooding engine to no compression is so low. That the should is trying to sell him a new/rebuild engine.

Could the flooded engine cause the engine to go from running fine to low compression so will not run in water? I am trying to find out what the shop considers low compression. I tested the ski and it had 130 at the beginning of the season. I used it for about 1 hour this year.

Could the carb be filled with water somehow?

What are some other thoughts on here.

Lets do the simple stuff first...

Do a compression est and see where it is. It is a FREE test and will produce some sort of an answer that WILL give you a direction to head or not to head..
 
125 on one side and 105 on the other

951 engine lifespan is ~200hrs or less due to them pushing hp/rpm.
Good compression is 135 and one cylinder that low is your/his lack of power.

Sorry to say that is more likely the problem and if had compression when you sold it ask him what he did or didn't biased on what you do/did.

If you take of head you'll get a better picture.
But complete rebuild is whats need. Top end is a band aid.

Other 951 versed members may confirm but its a touchy situ and uncomfortable one at that.

I thought that was the issue as well. And believe me when I say i understand that the 951 is touchy. What I can not understand is why would it run fine one minute, and I mean it was running good, then after he flooded the engine it not have enough power. I can not understand how flooding the engine could take it from running great to not running at all.
 
He tried to compress something that can not be compressed. Either something has to "give" or the engine has to lock up. Chances are, both happened,,,, rings, valves, pistons, crank, ect ect.
 
Look on here and you will see that the 951 does not tolerate any water ingestion. I am not sure that there is a definitive answer as to why but ti is very common.
Add another one to the count.
