They told me to spray my engine with WD-40 everytime that I came back from a day at sea. Is there anything better than WD40 or any other tips that you can give me to protect the engine besides the regular maintenance.

WD40 is a really a water displacer. So you're spraying the engine down to remove the water and prevent surface rust.

any other tips that you can give me to protect the engine besides the regular maintenance.
Regular maintenance is the best thing you're going to find for all aspects of the boat! Just keep on top of things

If you're boating in salt water, which I'm assuming you are by your "at sea" comment, be sure to run the engine on the hose for a few minuets every time to flush the salt out of the cooling system. Another good idea is to spray down the pump and linkage with silicone spray.
