Engine guys - a quick question

I was planning on doing a top end rebuild on the starboard engine (throw the boat in water the motor dies out when the throttle is opened up). Did a compression test and LOL, 80PSI and 130PSI - took off the head cover and, well, the gaskets seem to be the problem (the 80 side o-ring was cracked and the water seals had a lot of aluminum oxide buildup). It also seems like water is getting into the cyclinder, and there is no visiable, or feelable, damage to the cyclinder walls so heres my question:

For ceased motors or cyclinders with bad compression, can you tell simply by looking at the cyclinder walls?
