Engine electrical fire!!!

I have a 02' challenger 2000 240 EFI and last summer while idling to setup anchor one of the voltage regulators shorted out and caught fire. It burned for aprox 3 mins. I was able to replace the voltage regulator but some of the wiring was burned through the insulation. (aprox 7 wires)

Now in this situation I would cut out the exposed portion and crimp in some new wire, but the wiring burned close to the connections. And I didn't want to have a whole bunch of crimpped wires that are only about 4 inches long. since I run the boat in salt water I'm afraid the new wiring could be compromissed and short again. My question is there wiring kits or something that could be done to have a reliable electrical system.

Solder them and use heat shrink sleeving

I don't know of any kit that will replace the wires. I'd suggest cutting and splicing. Be sure to solder the wires. Don't use a butt crimp connector. Good luck

Most connectors can be taken apart so you can replace the individual terminals. I do this all the time at work when fixing electrical problems. If you look closely at the inside of the connector you may see a very small locking tab on the inside that holds the terminal in, just lift it up with a very small pick or large pin and most terminals will slide out.

Without looking at your actual connector I can't say for sure this is possible in your case, but most times it is.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to take a closer look at the connections and see if it's possible to replace the wiring from the terminal as you said. Also I haven't really traced which wires were affected and to what there connected to. I'll try and get some pictures posted in the next few days and that may give a better insight to the situation.
