Eliminate DESS?

How do you guys feel about eliminating the DESS post and installing cheap kill switch instead? My ski wouldn't start so in troubleshooting I connected the wires together bypassing the DESS, started right up. I'm not worried about someone stealing the ski, any other drawbacks?

Not sure what you have going on there but Dess cannot be bypassed by tying some wires together, that's not the way it works.

There is a black wire and black with yellow stripe coming from the electronic module to the post. I disconnected the wires and put together the ones at the end to and from the module, completing the circuit where the DESS would be. Is there more to it than that? The service manual just says to check continuity throufg the DSS, isn't it just a switch?

No it is not just a switch, there are two parts to it. one is magnetic and any magnet will operate that part , the other part is a chip reader, it reads the chip in the lanyard and completes the circuit in the electrical module so it will crank. Twisting a couple of wires together isn't going to do squat with a DESS setup !

I am curious how the DESS information gets to the MPEM or wherever it goes to unlock the system? Will the starter engage with a bad DESS Key ? I did all the tests on my ski and they show that everything is working properly. Just wondering if the KEY or my unit may have a case of Alzheimer's.

My ski started and ran with the current DESS Key. I have other issues with no spark but I was just wondering if this no spark condition could be attributed to a DESS issue. My DC CDI box is toast. I only had 3 readings in the normal range. My MPEM checks out but I have one out reading out of range. Gene does not like electronics. :)

I read that some early 96 skis did not actually have the dess system active. So doing what you did may work. But as said above, on real DESS skis, connecting the wires together will not work.

If an MPEM was never programed with its first key it will work when ever you connect those two wires. As in "keyless mode"

Also some MPEM's did not have DESS function but still used the DESS style post as a switch like the older push button style.

And aftermarket mpem's have that option of key or no key.

So for your question, IF the switch you replaced the DESS post with does the same thing, As in has teather to you. That's ok as long as it works properly and reliably.

95 was the year that had DESS capability but did not have it activated, all 96 models should have been equipped with DESS except for the models the models LISTED HERE : the SP, SPI, SPX and the GTS

Don't forget the 96' HX doesn't have it either. LOL.

Good info. I knew I saw that some were non DESS.

You can activate DESS on any 95 model but DESS is evil and once Pandoras box is opened you can't put it back in the box.

Stephen, Do you know the part # and supplier for the NO Dess aftermarket mpem's? I got the same problems with my 96. Thanks, fellow Cunuk!

FYI, the aftermarket MPEM's are not good quality and have failed for many members.
