DIY air intake on a 2006 rxt

I want to mod an air intake filter on my rxt I was thinking If I can just remove the oem intake front and just bolt on a air filter cone, would it work? And how does the oem intake keep out water? I do a lot of riding that usually includes my seadoo getting fully submerged in the water so if I just add and intake filter how do I keep water out?

You'll also need hose and a way to keep the air filter towards the top of the hull (zip ties could work)

I figured out mounting, but I need to find out how to keep water out and if it could be done with minor modifications to the stock intake

If you're mounting it high enough, water shouldn't be a real problem. You just can't mount it close to the bottom of the hull.

I don't see why you can't try it. It will be restrictive compared to a nice 4" intake like Fizzle's.

Give it a shot though, take some pics, and let us know how it works out. Just make sure that intake is mounted high in the hull.

I already bought a gigantic 9.5 inch long intake filter with a 4" pipe opening so I think I'll have any problems with flow. As far as I know the stock intake pipe in the picture has a 4" diameter

Stock intake is around 3".

IMHO what you're doing is not worth the effort get the adaptor for the supercharger and go full 4" Kanaflex with your filter on the end or leave the stock ducting in place.

On my RXP I bought the supercharger adaptor then went to the local hose supplier and bought 4" Kanaflex hose and clamps I used a 3" ABS coupling ( 4" OD ) to adapt from the hose to the air filter which I have mounted up high above the gas tank just under the steering.

Honestly I dont really want to spend more then $100 because I might sell
It next year so I might just use the stock hose.

What you are trying to do is a waste of your time. You will not see any performance gains whatsoever. You need to either go 4" or do a rear intake without a filter to see some sort of gain. All you are doing is wasting money and increasing the likelyhood of ingesting water into the engine. I've got less than $50 in my rear air intake.

I'm basically making this intake to decrrade the likely hood of water getting into the engine. I've got a pre filter wrap to keep water out.

Do you understand why the oem location is close to the bottom of the hull? Do you understand why the convection exit for the seat also opens toward the bottom of the hull?

The reason.....when the boat is upside down..they will be outa the water, that'll be leaking into your hull.

So....keeping a 4" front opening in the stock location isn't all that a bad thing.

A 3"rear air....shorty....right off the sc (below seat hight)might show an improvement in reducing air restriction..depending on the filter used and the type/amount of pre-filter also used. But you'll be drawin hot air so....eh....not recommended for performance.

Of course...if that filter has a cloth insert...I wouldn't give you 2 cents for the entire system...especially if it gets wet....heh.

Are you doing this for performance or are you worried about water intrusion ?

The factory intake system has been designed to minimize water intrusion if this is your main concern then leave the factory set up intact.

If you are looking for performance gains then a 4" intake will help but it's usually to support other modifications that work better with a less restrictive intake system a 4" intake by itself will show little gains. If you installed a bigger supercharger and free flow exhaust system then a 4" intake will definately help.

You mentioned not wanting to spend a lot of money and may sell it next year so I would just leave it stock and enjoy the ride.
