DESS Troubleshooting questions

Hi, I thought I had an issue with the DESS, the engine would turn over fast, but wouldn't fire. Turns out, it was flooded a bit and needs new plugs.

But, it made me think of a couple of questions in case I do need to troubleshoot the DESS in the future.

1. My lanyard shows 8.87 Ohms across it, and the post is running consistently at 18.99. Is this normal? Does the 8.87 number get subtracted from the 18.99 and that is what is programmed into the "brain"?

2. I don't get any beeps when I attach the lanyard to the post, but the multifunction gauge flashes, and it starts okay. I'm worried a bit that it's getting iffy as to whether it will work, since the lanyard wobbles around on the post and I'm not getting any beeps. I was getting beeps last week, so not sure if the beeper just needs replaced.

3. Can a a 96 XP be retrofitted to not require the DESS lanyard, maybe transplanting an electronic module from another model that uses just the button, and get it work right?

My Seadoos are locked up in a garage if I'm not on them, so the security of the DESS system would not be an issue for me. I saw a post that explained that a non-DESS system can be fitted to the models that only use the button type lanyard, but didn't see anything about going the other way with it.

Thanks!!
Scott

You would have to replace the MPEM to a aftermarket , I did then I changed it to a pull cord style.

Beeper is probably bad, it's pretty common, I had to replace it on both of my skis. You can disable DESS with the MPEM with a Candoo Pro or Buds, or get an aftermarket MPEM but I'm not sure why you'd want to do either. On my Candoo device it warns disabling DESS can brick the MPEM where it won't work at all, no guarantees either way.

You're not having issues at the moment with DESS, so I wouldn't create problems for yourself trying to either disable it or even worse, get an aftermarket MPEM.

I'd just fix the beeper and go ride...

I figured that it was just the beeper. I would work sometimes, and sometimes not, but still start.

Thanks, I'm taking it to the lake this afternoon to ride. :-)

You can test these beepers by bumping it on your battery its a crude test but that's all your doing on the ski is applying voltage to a speaker to get a certain frequency. However for 30 bucks you can source the part very easily.
