My neighbor has a 1995 seadoo sport boat. It has two engines; I believe it’s a speedster. At any rate, yesterday he ingested a rock approx 1.25 x 5/8” up through the protective grate and up into the pump finally lodging between the prop (blade) and the housing. He has since removed the rock. My question is might there be some finer grate available or could you attach a piece of , say, hardware cloth with smaller holes in it over the grate to stop smaller objects?

Nope cant do it you need the water flow to be free and clear or you would move. Best thing to do is dont drive in shallow water.
