I bought a set of used oem cylinders with new sleeves off eBay. Got it all assembled squish was off so disassembled to put different base gasket in. Upon removing cylinder found this crack. How could that happen? Is that maybe why the case was painted over? Cover it up?

Was going to say the same thing.

Looks like something pushed it apart. Only ice is going to do what you see there.

What part of the world did they come from? Florida or Minnesota?

I actually fixed one like that on my XP. Compression was 150psi and I'm not about to build a good engine. LOL I just pulled the head and did some grinding... filled it with some good metal repair product. No leaks thus far but.... the dissimilar metal and metal repair product could heat and cool with different growth rates and thus separate at some point. So far so good. Since it is my ski... I'm cool with it. The crack in my cylinder was much worse than yours. It separated under the gasket surface.

Having it off you might want to get an aluminum welder to do it right... "Once and Done." Only problem is cast aluminum can be difficult to weld due to impurities. It's a leak to the outside so... you'll see it if it is a problem. Good Luck man !!

Mine did that on a used engine, installed the engine, when I got it running and hooked it to the hose, poured water out the cylinders, wasn’t about to pull it again for some hairline cracks, let it dry, scuffed it up and slapped some jb weld water weld on them, no issues, this is also a beater ski that gets abused constantly so take that into consideration lol
