Cutting out like on rev limiter

I just picked up my first pwc. A 1996 SeaDoo GTX with what I was told a rebuilt motor. At first it ran get and most of the time it still does. But out of the blue while riding it will cut down and not go more then 3-3500 rpms and sound like it’s on the rev Limiter. It will do this for awhile and I try turning off and restarting til it goes again. Each time it starts back up it will run great at first taking off but then die back down again like on rev limiter. It doesn’t die just won’t go. I’m new to these just looking for help on what to look for. Thanks

Run it on the hose. Check your battery voltage at 4000 rpms. You should be at 13.5-14 volts. Remember when running on the hose to start engine first then turn water on. When done turn water off then turn engine off. Never run water through it unless the motors running.

Voltage regulator. When they go out they send AC voltage to the computer instead of DC and it freaks out. On mine the voltage tested fine but when I unpluged the red wire to it inside the front gray electrical box it ran perfect and once replaced it ran great.

As above when the rectifier goes it messes with everything including voltage to battery.

Just wanted to thank you all for help. I unplugged the regulator red wire and it runs perfect. I did have dirty rave valves that I cleaned as well. Now tomorrow to pick up a new one. Damn they aren’t cheap

I know one of our inmates here Matt Braley has been ordering the cheap ones from ebay without issue so far. His instructions were just look for the cheapest one that ships from a U.S . address.
THe OEM ones from seadoo are now showing as no longer available so our options are getting limited.

I got one from jetski plus as well. 19 bucks but need to test it yet. I couldn’t get myself to spend 182 at the dealer.

So I got a cheap one from jetski plus and it burned up. It started melting and wires were supper hot. The gauges would not work as well but once I unplugged the rectifier everything was fine. Guess I’m going to dealer now.

Sounds like you have a bad short somewhere. Even a cheap one shouldn’t burn up. I would check the stator and the stator plug. It would suck to put a new oem rectifier in and have it burn up.
