Question for those who knows more that me (that would be all of you:) ) I was installing new 1/2" water hoses on my 97 GTX and inadvertently switched the two hoses on the transom. Top one on the head is to go to the top hose connection for back flush the other hose to the jet pump and also tees to the pressure regulator on the muffler. Yep, those two got switched. I ran the machine from the launch to the shore, about five/six minutes and ran great. When I stopped I noticed a lot of smoke coming from within. Pulled the seat and saw that the smoke was coming from the muffler toasting the paint. It looking like a perfectly browned turkey. When I got home corrected the hoses, connected the garden hose and ran it and it seemed to be fine. My question... was any water getting to the motor to cool it with this hose configuration out on the lake? Did the motor heat up to the extent like the muffler? How much damage do you think was done if any?

As long as your beeper works, your engine should have had it going off if it was overheating. There are no sensors of such on the waterbox.

Edit:
Remember, garden hose with non-running engine could = dead engine.

I do wonder how the strap, supporting rubber/plastic components etc are since you were burning the paint.

Well, here is a twist on the story. My beeper does not work. I had previously ordered one from Floyd Bell and to throw salt in the wound UPS pulled up delivering the beeper just as I returned home from the lake. I did page thru the info center and did not see anything about motor temp.

I think the info gauge if you have one, would say it...but you would have to be paying attention to it.

I'm not familiar enough to help you any further. I would just check everything that shows signs of heat damage, stuff down stream and anything near and I guess hope for the best with a lesson learned to not run without the beeper.

I did the same thing last year- you're not alone. My exhaust is now a nice gold color now (was silver). The motor was being cooled (backwards) but there was nothing cooling your exhaust. I replaced the coupling on the exhaust with a Gates hose (PN 24032) and its been fine since. I have a few extra if you want a piece. Just PM me

If he was idling around water may have entered the system backwards but I don't see how if he was on plane

Edit:. Scratch that. I guess it will still come in through the wrong hose backwards. Had to think about that for a minute. Lol
