Cleaning a cooling system

What's the pros and cons on running products threw the cooling system.
Here in New England most of the skis are or have been in salt water.
I'm not sure if this has been talked about.

What I'm think about using like CLR and running it threw the cooling system at a low pressure.
I know you are suppose to run the ski if your running the hose on it. Is there a safe pressure you can run water threw with out starting the ski?
We all know what a salt water ski looks like when we open them but, what if there was way to clean out the salt corrosion with out cracking the motor open.

What's your thought.

When I lived in SoCal... I used Salt-away.

I've tried to use CLR in a few things... and it never worked as advertised. One thing to remember... the "Crust" in the cooling system isn't calcium, Lime, or rust. (well, not exactly)

thanks dr
i never looked that close to see what it was. just assumed it was. if there was a product. would the idea work?

I was actually going to start a thread asking the same thing. My "bad" motor in the speedster had a ton of crust in it so I'm thinking the "good" one has to be just as bad and wanted to figure out a way to flush and clean it out. A friend uses On and Off hull cleaner. He said to dilute it, pour it in like you would antifreeze when winterizing and wait a couple minutes then THOROUGHLY flush it with fresh water since it is acidic. He has had good luck doing this on many motors over the years. I was going to get some and test it on the disassembled motor to see how fast it cuts the crust and how much to dilute it and if I like the results, go for it on the assembled one!

Any other recommended methods? I saw the Salt-Away and it seems to work more as a preventative than actually eliminate the big stuff from what I was reading. Any luck using it on heavy scale?

Well it's warm out today. So I went and pulled out the exhaust system from the HX. I should have known what I was in for. But still surprised me to find.

This is the Crust I had in the one piece of pipe that was left in the ski.

Then I banged it on the wood block

I figured I better check the rest and found this.

Ran a garden hose in it for 20 minutes to get all the acorns and crap out.
The hooked it to my truck to get the water out. Lol

I'm going to bag some of that crap to run some test to see what will dissolve it! I will keep you opted if you care.

Yea I tried to smoke it. It wasn't. Lol
I tried
Carb cleaning spray
Carb dip cleaner
5f5
Floor striper
Tuff stuff cleaner
Orange cleaner
Gas
Paint thinner
Hot water
Bar keepers cleaner

Nothing is breaking it down.
Something out there is going to turn this to liquid.
I have then all sitting in containers to see if it takes time.

A previous thread suggested decent results utilizing vinegar to dissolve/clean deposits in the cooling passages?
I know it works for hard water deposits...
