I’m putting another 785 together. I have the bottom end sealed and torqued the RV cavity is sealed tight as a frogs ass.
I bolted the top end on without a base gasket and get a squish of .039 I was going to use a 4 hole gasket at .016 to get .055 squish.
Sounds about perfect right but could I run a 8 hole gasket to rise the port timing and mill the difference off the head and still get the 55squish with the higher port timing?
I’ve been reading some of Bill O’s old post’s and getting ideas on cheep HP.

If you shave the head like that then you might need to have the squish band re-cut. Maybe not if it's just a little bit. On 951's the difference can be taken from the top of the cylinders. On your 787 that would mess up the O-ring grooves obviously.

By head you mean the top of the cylinder correct? About .005" is about all I'd remove without cutting the o-ring area deeper.

Honestly it's not worth the trouble. It's not something you would ever be able to tell the performance difference.
