I've started calling my boat Christine after the car, except instead of it fixing itself from being broke, it inexplicably goes into a non working state from merely sitting in my yard under the cover. The second to last time I took it out, it had a fresh wear ring, but I didnt replace the neoprene ring so it was cavitating badly. However; it ran like a champ all the way to redline, very clean running, no misses, reminded me of a good running 2 stroke mx bike. I re sealed the ride shoe and pump, took it out again, and now it wont rev past midrange. It is smoking a little more than before, the motor does not seem to be laboring, its almost as if the throttle isnt opening all the way(it is). I cleaned the carbs this spring, but may end up doing it again(does not have the grey fuel lines, internal filters are clear). Another symptom is it does not want to idle, I have to goose the throttle when its running to keep it going. Will get a plug reading tomorrow.

i have the same boat

take off the intake grate,
have someone move the throttle in the drive way from min to max while you look at the butterflies, do they move all the way from open to close ?

you took off the pump, did you connect all linkage exacly the same, again back to the butterflies check that first

Butterfles are opening all the way, and the pump is also functioning fine, the bucket isnt obstructing the thrust at all. Plugs are dark and semi wet, but I have premix in the gas as well for break in of the top end.

if they look like this

then clean them with some break cleaner and a blue scrub sponge

They are all clean, I didnt skip any steps on the top end rebuild, I developed good habits on my dirt bikes and try to be thourough. Might as well pull them tomorrow and see if anything looks out of place...

alright, just ask'n, since wasnt mentioned in thread. What about the inline filter? you got different filter, that'll work. Here they're a "great" item, but, rather have "encased" filter, than something that can pull air.

I forgot to mention initially I rebuilt the top end, I can see where you thought it might need attention, my fault. Inline filter is A ok as well, I pretty much went through this thing with a fine tooth comb when I restored it, as the last owners beat it like a rented mule, so I assumed everything that could be wrong was; so I cleaning/inspected/replaced almost everything. Its really bothering me cause except for teh miss/revving prob that I cant diagnose, this thing is as close to new as you can get. Its like 110 degrees right now, no way Im working on it till later. Still going to pull the raves and see whats up, is there a possibility its getting to much oil, either from the premix, or the pump being adjusted wrong? I lined up the marks on the pump and cable assembly right, but might as well double check that too. Hell, guess Ill take the carbs off againg. Weird thing is it ran fine at high rpm when it was cavitating, I dont understand this. THe plugs have about 4 starts on them, I know they go bad quick, but what it the life expectancy on them with a break-in mix of gas?
