Hi guys, I found a bit of oil spray on the house that goes over the exhaust collector. Im posting a picture, unfortunately I cleaned it before thinking about taking the picture, so I downloaded a photo of an engine that looks just like mine and painted in red exactly where the oil spray is and how it looks, its easier to see this way. Its not much oil, but Im worried.

its a 255hp.

Hope someone can tell me what this is, what do I have to do and how bad it is.. Thanks!!

Do you perform your own service or take it in? If you take it in, was it in recently? Based on the location, it could be from the valve cover gasket, but it could also just be overspray from someone spraying XP-S lube in the engine compartment as part of the manual's corrosion prevention step.

I'd suggest wiping off all traces of the spray, hooking up the hose to your flush port and run it for a few (not more than 5), minutes to see if you can spot any oil spray while it's runnning. After you run it, make sure the boat is level and check your oil level, and look to see if anything is covered with oil. Let us know what you find.

Yes, Im starting to do my own services, learning (because the dealer in Cancun is VERY bad).

I did clean it then took it for a short ride, the spray was there again, so yeah, its not over spray from something else, and its coming from the valve cover, so I think you're right its the valve cover gasket.

Do I have to remove the spark plugs to open the valve cover? or just the 8 screws and change the gasket

Well, if you are doing your own work and didn't get a service manual when you purchased it, here is an excellent resource.

No, you do not need to remove the spark plugs. Remove the valve cover shield and the 8 bolts holding the valve cover on. Repalce the gasket, and reinstall the bolts. Bolts should be torqued to 29 in lbs (the first sequence), and 40 in lbs (second sequence).
