SO i have a 1998 bombardier gtx.... it has a fuel gage and thats it... I was wondering if you can add a speedometer to it? It does have an empty slot in the gage cluster beside the fule gage....

Is this possible? if it is where can these be purchased from? which one would you reccomend?

Thank you again for your time... and sorry if this is a stupid question... Im trying to learn everything i can....

Thanks again.

Also look at your service manual for electrical diagram. I don't understand there is a slot for it with out a speedo. The speedo operates off a through hull connection I think, so maybe not too good an idea to add that way.

I'm not sure adding a speedo would be easy. I know on my '95 GTX it's controlled by a wheel that is turned by the water current. You could mount a waterproof gps on your ski and it would read your speed more acurately.

I agree, either a tach or speedo. The speedo requires a hole in your PWC and a new gauge, IF the wiring supports it. Its nice but not necessary. Hope someone else offers some thing else.

well I cant really argue with anything to be honest... I really do not know much about PWC's at all.... Just hoping that someone has a solution.... I just figured i could buy the gage and install it... but i guess its much more then that lol

Check to the left of your nozel on the back of your ski. Do you see a little wheel with paddles on it, or even a possible spot for one? It may all bet there except for the gauge, I'm fairly new so I can only suggest this.

Here is a picture of the paddle that is on mine. This spins in the water and reads out on the speedo (probably why they are so unnacurate). Also sorry for the bad quality, my cell phone crapped out on me so I'm on a backup until I can get a new one.

Ok well im going to check for the wheel tonight or tomorrow when i get back home... Thanks for the replies to everyone.... So im guessing from what i have read here is that if their is no wheel mounted I have to either see if i can add one, or find a gps unit that will fit in that slot?

I will see if i can add some pics later of the setup that i Have...

thanks again...

a 98 GTX should have both an analog speedometer as well as a digital one in the info center. Are you sure you have a GTX?

The 98 GTX (951cc) has an analog speedometer, and a digital multifunction gauge which has compass, clock, tach, speedometer, water temp, air temp, etc. The fuel display is a small bar on this gauge. I believe this is standard on all 96+ gtx. Even the older GTX's has a speedometer. Either it isn't a GTX, or it has been heavily modified.

I did think it seemed a little odd that my '95 GTX has a speedo (it is the analog), and the '98 didn't have anything.

a quick update, ok , so i was wrong lol , its a gts ..... not a gtx..... it had a gtx sticker on it for some reason, but i found another spot where it said gts.... sorry....

Yeah, looks like that GTS model doesn't have the speedo then. Looks like a mounted waterproof gps would be your best bet.

I have some with speedo's and some without. I find a speedo worthless. Why do I need to know how fast I'm not going - they are WAY off, and not even close eonough to give a general idea of how fast you are going. I find a tach a great addition, and a valuable tuning tool.

in all honesty I was just really looking for something to fill in that empty spot on the gage pod..... and I just figured that a speedo would be the most useful thing.....

why would they have 2 spots for gages, but only put a fuel gage??? there has to be something ment for that spot... im just trying to figure it out...

Honestly I don't think anything is made to go there for your model. My guess is they used the same hood piece of another model, so they just put a little cap in there to fill the open gauge pod space. You could probably mount some sort of gauge there like a tach which would be helpful. Also be possible you want to add a sound system or something else and use that space for speaker, switches, or something else.

Ref: Empty slot or hole

Maybe you could mount a hobbs meter so you could monitor the time put on the engine for maintenance purposes. It's something you could readily monitor without accessing the MPEM that is if that model even has the capibility ... :-)
I have a 99 GTS and I too have pondered the question of what to put there as an added goodie.

well I just want to put something in that place... there is a spot, so why not fill it... idealy i would love to have a speedo, but i would settle for anything else..... how hard would it be to add a tach in that spot?

are the sensors already in place for it? or would i have to modify something to make it work? I really have no idea what to do here, its not really a priority or anything, but I still just want to fill that empty space...
