Broken off shaft protectors

So I searched around and didn't see mention of this, but how important do you think the shaft protectors are on a jet boat. At least I beliwve that's what they were. Blue plastic pieces that were around the shaft. My boat only had the last couple inches of one on one side and it has since fallen off. I'm not having any associated issues, at least yet. They are only about 14 ea. What do you think? You'll notice in the pic a few dots of rust. You can comment on that too. I swear I rinsed it. Maybe some sort of protectant. Just became a saltwater boat in the last 3 weeks.

Update: OK found a post. Says just leave off but the rusting sucks. Any ideas.

I agree, just leave them off. Not sure you can do anything but periodically treat the rust. A light film of vegetable oil is environmentally friendly and will reduce rust while it's out of the water.
