So I had the ski out today and at full throttle it just bogs at wide open throttle, it sits between 5k and 6k it wont go any higher. The ski has brand new carbs and no mods that i am aware of, whats funny is I always use 93 octane gas and for the first time used 87 marine fuel and i put some marine-stabil in..and then it started doing this. On my way in back to the dock i felt something funny happen and looked behind me and saw a ton of seaweed being chopped up..I reved the ski up and it just shakes and wont go fast at all but it revs up. So i have a bogging issue for sure and now I guess there is something stuck in the pump. My question is how do I go about cleaning out this pump ? And do you guys think its bogging because of the 87 fuel? Thanks JB

Fuel is fine. Personally I wouldn't bother with the 93 octane, That's just overkill. Get under your trailer and look up into the pump area. I bet it's full of grass/seaweed. I had this happen to me before with two passengers, Had good revs but no thrust. limped back to no wake zone and tipped it on it's side and pulled out huge wads of grass. Took it back out and it ran fine no issues.

The fuel had nothing to do with this. I agree with Rotor. Save your money and burn 87. The ski was made to burn 87. You need to pull the ski out of the water and inspect the grate area and inside the grate. Clean out anything you see. Look in from the nozzle end as well. If there are things you cannot get cleaned out or reach, you can just pull the pump. It only takes about 10 minutes. Just be sure to use lock-tite (blue) and torque the pump bolts back to the proper torque. The Venturi can just be snugged with lock-tite.

One other thing. When you are in the water and this happens. unless you really went where you should have, you can usually stop the engine and rock the ski back and forth from side to side in a quick action. This will usually causeanything stuck in the grate to fall free.

Ok thanks guys..I understand that the reving up and going nowhere has nothing to do with the gas. There is no doubt something stuck in my pump. What about the issue I had before something got suck in the pump with the bogging bewteen 5 and 6k? Brand new carbs, 62 hours, 150 compression in both cylinders and it was running PERFECT before I put a tank of 87 gas with marine stabil in it. I still have grey fuel lines, every jet ski mechanic i talk to about the grey fuel line issue keeps telling me its a myth and is not the cause of bogging. I don't know what to do.

i would pull a sample of fuel from the tank to check for water. a lot of times marinas don't have the same quality control as regular gas stations and tend to sell a lot of watery and old gas. part of it is probably due to the fuel usually sitting for longer between being filled up, but a lot of them just don't give a hoot how crappy their fuel is. most outboards can tolerate it but the higher performance PWC engines can't deal with it.

How much fuel additive did you put in it? At a minimum I would check the carb filters and make sure fuel lines are tight. One of my ski's had grey lines and while it didn't have a goo problem it did have a loose hose problem causing it to suck air and running out of fuel. the lines on the baffle get ovaled out from bouncing around to the point I could slip the fuel lines off and on without much trouble.

I can say three things.

1) You have a bunch of idiot mechanics around your area that do not know what they are talking about. And that is putting it politely.

2) Change your lines and check your carb filters is an easy way of seeing who is right.

3) <$100 dollars to replace lines and and rebuild or clean carbs or $3000 for a new engine. You decide.

I Put about an ounce of Marine Stabil in. I've had nothing but bad luck with skis and mechanics in my area, thanks to you guys and this site for all the great (honest) info.
