I have a 96 GSX that I bought used about 3 weeks ago. At the time I gave it a good once over started it up and run it dry for about 30 seconds and was happy with the way it run. It did seem to be a little "cold natured" but no big concern. The owner had a receipt where the ski had been serviced and a new exhaust gasket installed. I called the shop and the said the compression was good and it was ready to go to the lake...So I bought it.

I took the ski to the lake and it wouldn't start I only turned to over a few times and the battery seemed weak. I took it home and charged the battery and went back to the lake the next weekend. It started once and then no luck after that. It seemed to be flooding and the gas didn't smell right. I assumed bad gas (the owner did say it had been a year since it was on the water) I drained the tank and refilled. Cleaning the seperator along the way and it fired right up out of the water. Back to the lake I go...The ski Fired right up and across the lake I went running about 6000+ rpm and then it dropped to below 5000. I drove it back and loaded it up I pulled the trailer up and fired the ski and the RPM came back. I did a quick check on everything and it seemed fine. I backed the Ski back in the water no start again.

The store is the back side of the back jug is blown out and busted. I plan on replacing the both jugs and both pistons basically the whole top end. Is their any major road blocks I need to know of? Everything seems to be straight forward...

also...

Any ideas on the cause...? It had plenty of oil in the cylinder and was not run long enough to get hot. I want to trouble shoot before I get the new jugs in.

no takers...? I know its impossible to tell me why it happened but I am just looking for any ideas.

Thanks!

I use PWC synthetic oil so it shouldn't be the oil. I do have the grey gas lines which I am going to replace while I have everything out. I think the pump is working but I found way to test it on this site, I will test it to be sure.

Thanks again...

go with premix, if you are doing a rebuild go with premix you're already replacing your lines and new top end so why ask for problems? you have that pump turning thousands of rpms pushing oil that pump has no bearings so its not reliable.i have a 96 gsx also so I'm just trying to give you advice

I have been looking around the site and talking to other people and had pretty much decided that I was going to block the pump. I am new to jet skis so any and all advice is much appreciated.

Now I can't decide if I want to just rebuile the top end of spend $800 on an SBT motor...?

Thanks again

I went with rebuilt and a new oil pump. No worries.

i would go with a rebuild you'l be crazy/lazy if you go with sbt, max cost of your top end rebuild would be around $280 for 2 pistons 2 sleeves, and however much laber the machine shop will charge you for the bore. so you'l be up and running with less than $400 bucks invested this is the site i get my parts, they are fast shippers and beat everyones price, seadooparts.com free shipping on orders $99 &up
