So I just about to buy a 95 sportster single engine 2 stroke with the Bilge cock left out when they ran it in the water, engine has good compretion, but the thing wont start old owner says that it just needs to be completly drained( it was in the lake not ocean) anyone know what the odds are of him being right and if so could it be a cheap fix... Also anything I should look at before I hand he guy his cash?? Like little things, im not new to 2stroke, but I am new to Sea-Doo!!!

Bilge cock left out...for the bilge pump in the bottom of the hull? The only thing the water in the engine is for is cooling the engine, It has nothing to do with how it runs unless it isn't cooling the engine. Check for spark and ask when the carbs were serviced last. That's not a new seadoo so it might need some TLC, like carb rebuild, replace the gray fuel lines if it still has them as they deteriorate from the inside out and clogg the carbs also. It needs a fairly new battery fully charged too to start.

This link will give you some good ideas of what to look for also when buying used;

so

I bough it. It truns over fine, the motor doesn't even look like anyone has touched it with a wrench, and there is no rust around the bolts so that seems like a good thing, So I live in SD and good places to get Aftermarket pip or and HP parts for it????

Does the Steering move when the

Does the steering move when the Sportster is not on. the ski I just bought I can turn the wheel at all. I just checked that Is it a bad thing or does the ski have to be on to let it turn freely

The steering cable is a direct connection. It should move freely running or not. Check to see if the cable is ok by disconnecting it from the Jet nozzle on the jet pump and see if it moves then. It could be the steering end or the nozzle end or worse problem is it could be the cable. Check the "Parts" link at the top for a price, if it's bad.

Thank you

So when I washed it I decide to lub it, it steers fine, ok here are more
questions, when I took out the plugs there is a creammy white crap instead
of a black oil, it that the gas oil and some how water( from when the plug was left out) what I'm seeing, i'm gonna drain the gas tomorrow, Any
other ideas? Oh ya saw a crack in the starter. Is it hard to replace?

Ps you guys have been a great help, cars I know rotaxs motors gonna
take getting use too!!!!

Be sure it doesn't have water in the engine. Have you had it running on the hose Yet? If not get it running as that water can cause problems if it is allowed to stay in the engine and corrode the internals. If you did have it running it might have an internal water leak in the water jacket...

The starter should just unbolt and be removed. Check for a alternator or starter rebuild shop near by. They might be able to repair it cheaply.

If you want a manual you could become a "Premium Member" and down load a shop manual from our forum. Click on the manual link for details...it's like 10.95 for 30 days subscription...you can print it off for you r own personal and private use or just read it on line as a pdf file. for the month.

Humm

So i'm gonna rebuilt the starter tomorrow, do you think I should
drain the fuel still, could it just be water in the engine, and if that's the case, how do I get the water out?

Remember, the guy that owned it had the engine compartment under water, and then it didn't start after, I'm asuming the starter went bad
cause of them trying to turn it over with water in it. But it sat for
6 months!

6 months is a long time...does the engine turnover freely? It might be seized. Usually the fuel tank would be sealed so it shouldn't have water in it. If you could drain it and add fresh fuel, that's what I would do. I wouldn't spend too much on it, till you get it to run. If the engine has internal damage from the water and it's corroded pretty good, it could be costly to get it rebuilt or replaced. I would spray some wd-40 in the spark plug holes and ground the spark plug caps on the grounding post's,so it won't cause electrical problems to the ignition system. Then see it you can use the starter you have now to turn the engine over to get the water out. You will need a fairly new fully charged battery. DON'T jump it from your running car or truck, as it will over load the electrical system and could cause more problems. When it seems all the water is out add fresh spark plugs and get it fired up. Add a fuel /oil mixture into the spark plugs holes to get it to fire up. A couple oz's of fuel and a small amount of 2 stroke oil you use now. After it does fire up shut it down and connect the garden hose. Start it again. When it is running turn on the water so it won't over heat and let it run for no longer than 5 minutes. Then, turn off the water and shut off the engine, in that order so the water won't flood the non-running engine. I would then do a compression test at this point. The ideal compression should be 150 psi per cylinder. I hope you can get this far without spending money on a battery or starter to hear it run. Let us know how you make out.
