I will have to replace the engine in a 2002 GTI ( full of water for 2 yrs). Who, Where has the best rebuilt engine on the market? I have seen places on the internet but who can you trust. I heard that SBT is the largest but I also heard they have a failure rate of about 23%. I only want to go through this engine swap once. Who do you recommend?

Thanks for your replies.

Keep looking - I see 3 places, sbt, fullbore and east coast cycle - fullbore is close to me and has a good reputation on the great lakes, sbt is close to you - maybe you can take a day and visit the shop with a tour, the other one I have only heard one story of waiting a long time but it could happen anywhere as they had to hunt down used parts to replace damaged ones - if you do this legwork before shipping it to a shop you would probably see about the same turnaround time.

SBT or Fullbore

Fullbore all the way... My 1997 gsx has a SBT engine and the 1996 gsx has a Fullbore... Lets just say the SBT is always eating wake.:puke:... I sold my 1997 GTI with a new SBT in it... I'm sold on Fullbore.... They are busy, and I had to wait a few weeks. But it was well worth the wait...:drool5:

You stated that your engine ingested water two years ago and you may have to purchase a new motor.

On that thought, you may find this info helpful.

A friend was in a similiar circumstance a few day ago; he bought a 94 GTX that ingested water a few years ago and the water was never expelled.

Well, since I had very recent experience removing and disassembling an engine, (my 1st one) out of curiosity, we pulled the engine last night.

In his case, before we pulled the engine I rotated the PTO to ascertain whether it was frozen and it was not.

That said, my thought was that in consideration that purportedly there was water in the engine for about two years, maybe the crankshaft bearings were rusted?

That was not the case. Everything looked fine.

The carbs, however, has some rust which he will be cleaning.

Based upon the foregoing, maybe you may be in the same circumstance, so don't jump and purchase a new motor until you check your old one out.

Just some thoughts from a Shade Trree mechanic.
