Pulled the starter on my 2001 gti and bench tested it. The gear kicks out and spins but only kicks out for a second then falls back but continues to spin is this the way its supposed to be or should it stay out till power is turned?

Most Bendix will retract when the RPMs decrease (even a little bit) or the engine RPM surpasses the starter RPM.

So, it may retract as it is getting thrown out and likely faster than the starter RPM due to no load on the Bendix.

I have seen many retract when bunch testing. Sadly, until you get it bolted up and put a load I. It. You just won't know.

My problem is that the ski will not start I have power do to the starter so i dont think it is the solonid and if i bang on the starter the starter will spin but still not start the ski

With the plugs out, can you turn it over by hand?

If so, then do a load test on the battery. Needs to be 11.8 or higher in most cases.

If it is good, check the cables and connection VERY well. Wiggle the ends. If they crunch or white powder comes out, replace them.

If all if that is good, I'm betting you have an aftermarket starter. If so, get a used OEM and install a brush kit in it.

@Minnytonka4me can likely help you with a starter.
