Battery light. 96 gti

Ok quick question. In my 96 GTI i have battery light on or flashing all the time. Ski starts and runs fine but light will not go off. Voltage (not started on battery is 12.4 and running goes up to 13.8. I notice in the manual it says should be 14.5 to 14.8 of something. Is that the reason for my light , weak charge and if so what would be causing this, the regulator? Thanks in advance for any help.

If you are showing 13.8 volts... the light should be out. I bet the wire is broke, or the connector is messed up.

Thanks Dr. I will trace the wire out and see what i can find.
