Bad Weekend

So its been the long easter weekend and of course the perfect time to go to the lake and enjoy the ski.

Now my ski was ridden aground by a friend a couple months ago and insurance covered it with new ride plate and impeller tidy up etc. So the jet pump had been out to accomplish these jobs.

Now since the repair (had the ski back about 3 weeks) I have maybe put 2hrs on it and then 1/2 an hour into the lake fun the jet pump just seized up solid. Luckily we had a boat also so just no ski for the weekend, but I got back today and pulled the jet unit and then split it to get the cone off. It was full of water and the bearing has burnt out big time, now some of the grease was old but there was also plenty of clean grease in there also. When the repairer carried out the work I did ask if they'd be checking the cone grease and he said yes, of course I dont know if they did but it would seem strange to do it and not have had water contamination then and have all this damage done in just 2hrs of use.

So you tech guys out there what are your thoughts on the amount of time water would need to be in there to ruin the rear bearing?

No way the bearings will seize from water within 2 hours if they were covered in grease. Sounds like they were sitting for a long time causing them to corrode which caused the failure. Hope you get it repaired and back on the water quickly!!

Adding a bit of grease to old grease or not adding grease at all when there was contaminated grease in the cone wouldn't hurt the bearings that fast. What exactly did your friend hit when he trashed your ski? My bet is there was damage that may have gone unseen even with a cursory inspection.

He simply rode it up out of the lake, went up a small grass embankment. So Im pretty sure what he did was not any part of the cause. As with the first reply I believe myself that its been like that for sometime. So did the repairer even have the cone off like he said he would or did he just do it the quick way.

Ive got it apart myself and kind of regret ever taking to a service agent now.

He simply rode it up out of the lake, went up a small grass embankment.....needed a new ride plate and impeller tidy up etc.

Hmm...what was involved with the prop being tidied up? Wear ring was okay?...drove it outa the water...hmm..he'd never touch my ski ever again.

Wear ring was not bad but got replaced anyway. The prop had eaten a few decent size stones on the way out through the shallows so they had the prop off to basically file the tips all nice and tidy, also straighten the tips. I was fighting with them a little saying it should just be replaced for the sake of it but nope they just tidied it up.

Okay...they're pushing it. Filing off portions of a bent prop will throw it outa ballance even if they just took out a lil here or there...not to mention aiding cavitation by removing blade material and increasing the gap between it and the wear ring.

However, if that prop hit stones there is a real possiblity that alone hurt the bearings.

yea i think they just took the cheap option being it was under insurance. Im really regretting taking it to the shop now.
