Are all lanyard keys the same?

My 2008 RXPX came with three keys, two regulars & one learner. Tonight I deleted one of the regular keys from the MPEM & added it as a RENTAL. For some reason after doing that, all three keys show L-Key when put on the post. Delete the key I just added as a rental, or add it as a regular & all seems normal again. I have been searching the web, & it would seem all three keys are actually the same. Is this true? IT would seem as if they are different or somehow I am doing something wrong.

Thanks! 68RT

All keys are individual and have to be programmed, but you are programming the ECU not the MPEM.

From the book:

Digitally Encoded Security System
(DESS)
The following components are specially designed
for this system: Multi-Purpose Electronic Module
(MPEM), EMS ECU, safety lanyard cap and safety
lanyard post.
The safety lanyard cap contains a magnet and a
ROM chip. The magnet actually closes the reed
switch inside the post which is the equivalent of a
mechanical ON/OFF switch. The chip has a unique
digital code.
The DESS circuitry in the EMS ECU is activated at
the factory. Therefore, a safety lanyard must be
programmed to start the engine.
NOTE: Actually, it is the memory of the EMS ECU
which is programmed to recognize the digital code
of the safety lanyard cap. This is achieved with the
VCK (Vehicle Communication Kit) P/N 529 035
844. Refer to B.U.D.S. help system to program a
safety lanyard.
The system is quite flexible. Up to 8 safety lanyards
may be programmed in the memory of the
watercraft MPEM. They can also be erased individually

How did you delete the key? What tool are you using? Why in the world would you program one of your keys as a rental anyway?

I understand how DESS system functions & I will probably call the electronics an MPEM forever seeing I started with 1992 machines ;) But I will work on that.

What I am asking is if each key is the same & solely determined by the ECU if it is a learners, rental, or regular, or is each key internally different in its capabilities.
I have a CanDoo pro simular to the Buds system.

Why change it is easy. I have younger kids that can drive , but think 30-35 MPH is boring. however I don't want them going 70 in 7 seconds. They are not ready for 255HP. I believe the "rental" key will go 50 mph or so & limit the throttle to 80% or something like that?

My older skis only have learners or regular modes, so the rental mode is something new to me.

Yes every DESS key is the same. It is how you program the keys of what their function are. I have the CanDoo Pro also. I had this same issue. Have you upgraded the software on the CanDoo? When I tried to make a spare key for mine it set all of my keys to normal key. After I updated my CanDoo software and took all of the keys out and put them back in, it worked fine. You can look at this form on the CanDoo site. It will give you step by step instructions to update the software.

Thanks!

Yes, I have the most recent updates. One thing I did not try is deleting all the keys. Should I try that & do one key at a time?

I assume then I need to delete all the keys, then write to the ECM, then read the data & add the keys again?

It would be awesome if I can use the three keys I have now.

Also, if I delete all the keys, I assume the candoo will still communicate with the ski? I am guessing its the power up of the electronics that allows communication & not a valid key? Just didn't want to delete all the keys & be locked out.

Yes you will have to delete ALL of the keys and then you just have to have one on the DESS port to power it. Then you will be able to write to the ECM. Are you on version 138?

Yep, its at version 138.

I just tried this:

I powered it up with a key from another ski. Then read all the data. deleted all keys. then added each key in this order. Regular, rental, learner. Then wrote the data to the ski.

I put the regular key on. its powers up in normal mode. But, as soon as I install either the learners, or the rental it shows L-key. But, after that all three keys say L-key.

I was going to delete all keys & write to the ski, but I got a warning that I might damage the module, so I didn't do that.

HHhmmmmmm.

BTW, if I just add the learners & the regular keys, it toggles back & forth each time. But as soon as I have a rental key, everything I put on the post says L-key Sorry if I made that confusing.....

I have not tried to program a rental key. I did a learning key and a normal key. I would put a post of the CanDoo forum and ask about the rental key part. It did tell me that same message when I went to delete all of the keys, but on mine you could take a brand new key out of the package and put on there and it would say that it was a normal key and would start the ski, so it was already not working correctly.

Thanks for all you advise. I just made a post on the candoo forum. I will post back if I hear something. For now, I guess I will go back to regular & learners. maybe if you make it a rental, the ski is in rental mode no matter what.

I don't know why BRP didn't call it an intermediate key. Rental sounds silly & is really not a needed term.
out of the 1000's of these things sold. not that many are rentals were they should have there own terminology IMO. ;)

I think I just figured it out........

When I was testing the keys, I didn't give it more than a few seconds between key changes. When I then I waited 20 seconds between, After that the display goes back to normal, for the regular key. So I "think" its all good & I was changes the keys too quickly.

That's great. Good to hear you got it working. What about your rental key? Is it working also?

Well, I can't water test it as its just on the trailer in my shop. But, it now toggles between normal & L-key for both the learners & rental mode keys. I will report back after I get a chance to water test it.

Thanks again, your posts kept me working at it. This will make my kids happy that they can drive it & me happy that they won't send themselves skyward after hitting a rouge wave at 70MPH.

That's great. I was the same way when I posted on the CanDoo forum. I needed someone to keep giving ideas to try. It's great having forums like this to help others.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner.. I did get your PM.. Sounds like you have it solved now though. To confirm, the key/lanyards are internally identical. The only reason there is a color difference is so that you know which key you are choosing to use. In all that I have read you do need to delete all keys and then start from there. Have a good weekend...

Good morning guys! I am up north with the family enjoying my coffee.;) Did a lot of riding yesterday & hope to do more today if the weather cooperates. Was a little chilly & windy yesterday.

Just to confirm, everything did work out fine & thanks for helping me through it. The rental key does appprox 50-55 mph weakened, but still very snappy. the learners does about 35-38 I put a zip tie on the one I programmed as a rental. worked out perfect.
