A friend of mine has an 01 XP. He parked it at the edge of the water on a makeshift ramp he set up and..... thats where it stayed for 2 years....... until tonight.

I know there is a lot of cleaning, cleaning fuel system, air vents, battery, spark plugs.... all the obvious.

Before i turn it over for the first time i am looking for the things that can only be learned by experience.

I have worked on many things in my life, jet ski's are very low on the list of my mechanical experience.

So guys, give it to me straight........ any suggestions on things to do, tricks to maybe make things go smoother, need better pictures of anything?

Worst case: Connect the trailer to my truck and bring it back to my buddies house. I got it off the dock and onto the trailer... so it's a win-win for him.

And i did search. Couldn't find anything up my alley as far as suggested checks.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't worked on that particular model. All of the things you mentioned sound about right. That's what I would do. Start with the fuel system and then then engine etc: Looks like you have a good project on your hands. That seat is gonna be fun. Good luck.

It's horrible to see that kind of neglect. A wonderful ski gone to crap! A little love and it will be back to new.
I got a ski in a similar situation and the first time out after cleaning it all up the crank locked up. There was light rust on the crank bearings that I could not see. If you can pull the carbs and reeds try to inspect the bottom end as best as possible.

yes, assuming the OP isn't able/willing to do a complete tear down thats the best you can do... but frankly, and i've said this before on different threads regarding neglected ski's, if its been outside that long, and sitting on a lake shore, i'd suggest a complete tear down of the engine. even a minor problem down in those cases and all the cleanup work will go to pot as soon as it locks up, blow's the cases, and your shopping for a new engine instead of just a set of gaskets.

hope for the best, but assume the worst !

In the process of cleaning. before and after pics to come......

Any hints on how to get mildew off the yellow plastic around the gauges and mirrors?

Once i get the outside looking decent then i will dive into the engine bay and clean stuff as i pull it out to check and lube.

It is abvious he is not deserving that ski. I think he should give it to you for all your hard work. I have had good luck with a mild solution of bleech and water on the mold then follow up with some Castrol SuperClean and a scrub brush followed by some 303 protectant. A complete gasket set for that engine with crank seals is only about $80 so get that engine out and torn down. It will be a fun project and a learning experience and a good base to get that diamond in the rough back on the water. BTW that is the best looking year for that ski IMHO.

Going to have to do some looking for the 303 protectant. I use some of the Bleach Kitchen cleaner from under the sink followed by a few psi from the car wash nozzle. Came out ok. Going to sit down and have some lunch now. Still have to clean all the pull out tray's then i will get on pull some air hoses and spark plugs so i can hit the local dealer for new plugs.

Any recommended brands for plugs?

yes yes and yes...

and ya, it was a good looking year, I had one just like it a couple years back, and a good seat really helps.

the only thing I regret not doing on mine was replacing the stock mats with new, I hated the stock mats !

Outside looks 1,000 times better and inside is not as bad as I thought. Get that engine out and clean the inside too. Looks like you have a good helper.

Still regret selling my 1997 XP Sleeper. Love the XP hull and the silver looks awesome but what is up with the black rear hatch seadoo?

wow is right, that cleaned up REAL nice !!!

Amazing! Looks real good on the outside. Now for the inside. Get that motor out and taken apart. Same as my motor. Not to bad to do.

Got some marvel mystery oil sitting on the piston. Got new NGK's sitting in there. New battery on my work bench charging up.

*Edit, also Seafoamed the gas tank and put some 2 stoke water remover. Can't hurt....... Just let it sit for a while for me to order the carb kit.

I can't see pulling the motor for a bike that i may not buy. Lots of work for someone else's ski. I think i will pull the carb though. These things hard to rebuild?

Maybe if i can dig up the service manual without having to donate ;-) (Edit* Found One. Operators guide, parts catalog, and Shop Manual) might do the whole motor. Gotta get a little more familiar though before i am ready to tear down one of these dudes.

The marvel mystery oil might be ok but it is the crank and the pistons that you need to be concerned with, I would just use 2 stroke oil. Get that seafoam and water remover out of the fuel system. Additives like that are a sure fire way to destroy a 2 stroke. Put a gallon or two of fresh gas in the tank and slosh it arount and siphon it out and a full tank of fresh gas. that is all that needs to be done to the tank.

I understand not wanting to spend the money but you asked what you need to do and we are telling you. If you do not want to take the advise that is fine but we are telling you these things because you asked. A ski that has been sitting this long especially in a damp and humid environment needs to have all the things done we are suggesting. You can add gas and possibly get it started but you will be guaranteed to destroy the engine no matter who owns it. The carbs are easy to do but you need to follow the directions given.

I understand and appreciate the advise. I was looking for more directed information though.

If i intended to remove and rebuild the motor why even ask? I was looking for the highlights version of things to check. I understand the risks of not rebuilding the motor but really do not intend to completely remove and rebuild a motor on a ski i don't own. The advise is all appreciated. Receiving advise will not always be taken but it is good to know the risks and possibilities.

The seafoam and heet are listed as 2-stroke compatible. I made sure of that before leaving the store. Why do you say they are 2-stroke killers? Something i am not seeing there?

Ok. I'll send it to you right away. I am wondering the same thing about Seafoam? It is 2 stroke compatible. It gets rid of or does something to that ethanol crap in fuel now. Takes the water out of something. I forget and don't care I just know it helps the fuel somewhat. Getting rid of ethanol would be the best thing.

Here is the deal with seafoam, HEET, Techron etc. It is a solvent and is used to remove varnish and deposits form carbs and intake valves. On a 2 stroke the only lubrication your engine gets is delivered by the fuel and is actually a very small amount. Any type of additive or solvent will remove this very thin oil film from your moving parts and that is all she wrote. The additives might be fine in a weedwacker or low power 2 stroke but you have to understand these seadoo engines are delivering big power for their size. There is nothing in the fuel system that these additives will clean or cure. If your carbs have been sitting and have crap in them and additive is not enough to get them clean and is also very hard on the rubber parts. Flush the tank with fresh fuel, drain and add fresh fuel, that is all that needs to be done to the tank.

On the cheap.....
1. Remove all old fuel and clean the tank.
2. Replace all gray fuel lines, they go bad from the inside out.
3. Rebuild the carbs.
4. add a little 2 stroke oil down the intake and spark plug holes and make sure you can turn it over by hand.
5. Replace jet pump oil.
6. Install new spark plugs and battery.
7. Give her hell.

This is the minimum I would do but it sounds like you now understand the risk so we will help if we can.

I hear good things about the StaBil Marine but I have only used their origional. Of all the Crap fuel we have in California ethanol is not an issue here so I do not use additives for it.

Ethanol gas here is garbage. It ruins our vehicles motors, cats, and sensors. Plus, we get worse gas mileage. Before ethanol I was getting 20 miles per gallon in a Dodge Dakota V8 auto, to now 14 miles per gallon. I have tried everything to get it back up to 20 mpg. Nothing works. I'm not the only one here in my state. Can't use it in outboard motors here on boats. It kills injectors badly. Have to add something to the fuel to keep it from doing that. I figured Seafoam would work in ski's as well. Maybe a 4 stroke it would. I didn't know Seafoam was a cleaner. I guess it is now that I think about it. I've seen that StaBil Marine. Hmmmmm.....?????
