99 XP - Not Cooling When In Water

Got this used and runs great on the hose, but overheats when riding.

When I hook the hose up to the fitting in the back, water squirts out the telltale on the left side of the hull. I have three (3) ports in the transom next to the jet pump (9 o'clock position; 1 o'clock position; and 2 o'clock position). My manual doesn't say if these are supposed to be plugged off or left open. When I run the garden hose, water squirts out of the smaller nipple (at the 2 o'clock position) and at the side of the hull. Should water be squirting out of the left side of the hull when I'm riding?

Yes, water should squirt out of the left side hull when riding under throttle, at idle it will stream out or barely squirt out. Make sure the main inlet line is clear at the middle of the head all the way through the to the hole in the pump wall.

There's only one exit at the rear of the pump. The other two are blocked off.

Most common plugged coolant line on the xp is the exit line at the bottom of the cylinders on the right side directly under the exhaust bracket. Disconnect and blow out with compressed air. They tend to clog up with sand and other crud.

Thanks for that info.
So if the garden hose hooks up to the larger fitting on the right side, does it get capped off before launching?

What is the similar large fitting for on the left side? What blocks it off?

What is the smaller fitting for on the right side? What blocks it off?

When watching youtube video's of these riding, we don't see water coming out the side of the hull. Like I said earlier, when on the hose, water shoots out 4' from the side of the hull.

When on the hose you are running the water in the reverse of normal.
The fitting for the garden hose is left open when riding.

When running in the water yon have to have water coming out of the side of the hull. This is there to see that you have water flowing. If you don't see it you have a problem and need to stop.

You should have water flowing when on the hose.......
1. Out of the pisser on the side of the hull.
2. The small hole on the plate for the pump going through the hull.
3. Out of the pump itself where the impeller is.

Under normal operation the water goes from the impeller through a hole in the pump body into the main cooling line and into the head. The fitting for the garden hose is a return line to dump excess water. The small hole on the bulkhead is a low level drain that flows some water under power but is mainly to drain the engine of standing water when shut off. The pisser on the side is to let you know you have water flowing.

It looks like we need to be looking at the hose from the pump to the cylinder head.
What I'm getting so far is that we don't need to worry about plugging any of the three fittings on the back.
I was sure that's where we were losing pressure when in the water.......

No, nothing should be plugged. It is pretty easy to pull one hose at a time and blow air through it.

Hi,
We re new to this forum so first of all hello everybody :).

We recently bought an xp from 98 and have exactly the same problem I already took off all hoses cleaned them and they are free.
Even when I remove the hose from the back side which is settled at the membrane above the exhaust water is pumping when in water. But no water is pissing out of the left side.

Till now I even do not understand how the water pump system is working what are the membranes that are settled at the head of the cylinder doing?

When the garden hose is connected out of the water everything works fine.

Any more ideas?

Nicolai
