I got a 99 XPL 951cc and yesterday on the water it ran great then I was tide up to a boat and was cruzing on it but then decided to ridw the ski do to the wake pushing it around a lot. But it would not start after that. so it sat for a bit then it fired up but cylinder 1 was cutting in and out. Pulled up on the sandbar and pulled the plugs and cylinder 1 was oil up pretty good cleaned it and ran it and it was good for 5-10 mins and then did it again. what could it be? I was thinking maybe the carb float is stuck and only oil is making it to the cylinder? or somthing?

Towing the ski was just like have it on the garden hose with water on and the engine off. You have to Pincher off the supply hose from the jetpump to the
motor whenever you tow a jetski.
You've put water into the lower case, it probly went into the pulse line then into fuel pump. Any crap got transfered too. Now you have moisture molecules & crap
in the carburetors. You need to open them up and clean carb filters, blow out any water../// Bills86e Oh, Salt or freshwater?

Carbs are vaccum driven not DI at least I think. So do I need to pull the carbs off completly or can I remove just the screen? I'll try to pull up a diagram for them but I am guessing they are all pretty much the same

DUDE, you'll need to get that motor running within 24 hours from the time it ingested or you are faceing a costly re-build or implosion. The piston pin & crank bearings will
rust. If you cant get it, fill the lower case with oil rich pre-mix and rolll the ski over
& over to get oil on the raw internal metals! Just my advise. Bills86e

All so FYI my mech had me mix some oil with the gas do to not have put the oil block off kit on yet. So it runs a little rich if someone can send me a PM with a number so I can talk to someone over the phone and nip this issue in the butt thanks

727-547-9300 Or any local shop in your area should wecome a newby drop-by.

Other Techs here.....Please chime in!

or e-mail: LEPWC.COM, with any question

I called that number but they were closed so I did have it running and I will run again tomorrow. I will also clean the carbs. so As long as I can run it any water in lower casing should get expelled?

SHE LIVES so far. I was pulling the motor out to tear it down and I was thinking about the starter before hand but I still wanted to check but the motor is free and the starter took a dump. NOW what should be my order of task?
order carb kits?
starter is being rebuilt tomorrow
the motor spins freely
before I put it back together is their away to flush the lower end?

What did the starter reveal? What do you ring teeth look like? Bits from starter and
ring can get into the stator. At least open that cover and vacumn out the small metal bits as it will interfer with the electrical operaton of the Magnito. Bill

Do a compression test.

the starter teeth are all good and dont see any distorted or broken teeth thinking the internals took a dump. maybe it arched and burned it up but is being checked today at a starter rebuild shop
Being my motor is free how can I lube and etc to the lower to be sure everything is out of it

ok NOW I thought the motor locked up but it wasnt the starter was not working. so after having it tested and was fine i noticed that the front of the housing for the starter was broke. so I replaced that and put it back in. But still nothing but a little noise from it like its not engaging. it will turn the motor over when i hook a direct ground to the starter and a positive but not when normally hooked up. grounding issue? the block is grounded so what else could it be? I need to try to get that solved so I can try to run this thing and fog it. I have been keeping it lubed with fogging oil in the cylinders and spraying it down the carb ports and turning it by hand.
please help.
thanks

You should load test the battery, then the starter to resolve the issue. If you put a wrench across the relay/starter solenoid lugs and it cranks, the solenoid is bad. Bill
