Recently purchased a 98 Bombardier GS with an electrical issue.
No beeps no gauges
found the 5 amp fuse blown, read that that is indicative of a short, and began to hunt it down. after much looking i found that when i plug in the magneto wire the fuse blows. Does this mean i have a bad magneto or could this be a mpem issue? is there there a way to differentiate them? i'm having a hell of a time getting the flywheel off to get a look at the magneto and before i do anything drastic i wanted to know i'm sniffing down the correct trail. also i tested my starter solenoid for continuity across the tops poles and it was continuous, does that me i need a new starter solenoid?
tested the NESS seems to be conncting
Tested the beeper seems to be working
tested the start button and is definitely working
Is there a method for testing the rectifier?
also i tested the leads into the magneto and 2 pairs of them have resistance and are connected but if you cross pairs i get no resistance.
also if i replace the fuse with a piece of copper, the 15 amp one in the back blows.

Thank you to anyone that can help, let me know if im missing info.

You either have metal particles stuck to the contacts in your stator or the stator is shot. Either way you have to pull the front cover and pull the flywheel . Don't jumper any wires with copper you may fry your mpem while it's in this condition.

Pulled flywheel and found the ignition coil had a few good nicks on the top, i think that was what was causing the short. the other 3 coils looked good but one had a small chip. i think ill clean out the housing, replace the stator and see if the blown fuse goes away.

final question ( i think), when i tested the continuity across the posts of the starter solenoid it sounded the beeper so does that mean the solenoid is bad too?

Test the stator with the procedure in the repair manual. You can download off the Internet for free. Each year Ski can be different from the next. Un-plug the startor. See if it pops. Check the 15 amp fuse too. Most of the wire harness passes through the stator. So if it is shorted to ground it will pop the 5 amp MPEM fuse. If you have room to work. You can pull the fly wheel off with a cheap steering wheel puller. Use a heat gun on the hub to get it to come loose. Protect the gas tank with a board or big wad of rags. It will come loose violently! Make sure you read about the factory index marks if it has them. Important for ignition timing!
